Dishes, not so many. Those are done by hand often anyway. Dishwashers without power are very convenient drying racks though.

Clothing on the other hand - well, it's a good thing I get a uniform allowance each year, 'cause I'm probably throwing some of this stuff away...

Yay power!

Seriously guys, thanks for hoping we were safe, but please send at least some well wishes down to Galveston and the Bolivar Pennisula. In a couple of towns down there, there are NO buildings left standing.

Aside from fear of shattering glass, wind is COOL!

So I saw some photos of Galveston....did anyone at all survive? How could they if they did, there was like nothing left. Thank God you guys are away from the coast.

Dishes by hand? ~shudders~ I remember when our dishwasher was broke for 5 days...worst week of my life.

Well not seriously but I hate dishes.

Everybody knows that Galveston does NOT do well in hurricanes. If not, they should - I grew up knowing that the only place to be devastated worse than the MS Coast in Camille was Galveston in some hurricane before hurricanes had names.

Yeah. I rode out Ike. It was dreadful... We had to drink warm beer. Gross. Warm Mountain Dew... Nasty...

Nah... The only problem I had was no way to charge my cell phone and no fan at night. I can't sleep without one. I got probably three hours of sleep at a time since we lost power.

I'm quite sure that, given your age, you mean root beer, right?

Of course, Tanaww, entirely IBC. B! Give that Bud Lite back to my sister!

Galveston was flattened in 1900. There are still some buildings still standing, ironically, on the West End which is what was wiped out in the 1900 storm. The East End got it this year. Most of the Galvestonians got out, I believe, the death toll stands at around 20. But we may never get a full accounting since some were swept out to sea. The death toll from Bolivar is higher, those that did get evacuated by rescuers claim that by the time they got the Mandatory Evacuation Order, the roads were already gone in the pre-storm storm surge.

Frankly, if you see the water rising, wouldn't you GET OUT, mandatory evac or not?

OK, what is it about barrier islands that are so attractive to property owners. They are, by their very nature, temporary bits of land. It's not a question of IF they're going to be wiped out by winds and waves, it's a question of WHEN.

I'm guessing that the builder will be quite busy with work for the next few years...talk about free advertising of his work.

If they mentioned the bloody builder at all. I was trying to find out who built the house for my boss who has a house down there.

Yeah, here's the view from above.

Quote:
The destruction of Gilchrist
Many of you have probably seen the photo of Gilchrist, Texas showing complete destruction of the town of 750 people, save for one lone home. High-resolution satellite imagery made available by NOAA's National Geodetic Survey (Figure 1) confirm that of the approximately 1000 structures existing in the town before Hurricane Ike, only about five survived the hurricane. Approximately 200 of these buildings were homes, and it is thought that some of the residents attempted to ride out the storm in their homes. According to media reports, about 34 survivors from Gilchrist and the neighboring communities of Crystal Beach and Port Bolivar have been fished out of Galveston Bay in the past few days. Rescuers who have reached Gilchrist have not been able to find any victims in the debris because there is no debris. Ike's storm surge knocked 99.5% of the 1,000 buildings in Gilchrist off their foundations and either demolished them or washed them miles inland into the swamplands behind Gilchrist. Until search teams can locate the debris of what was once was Gilchrist, we will not know the fate of those who may have stayed behind to ride out the storm.

And you shouldn't need a geology degree to figure that much out, either...

Yeah, at least where I'm from people could swim out. There doesn't seem to have been anywhere to swim to for those people.
