Default Hello

My names Mike, and ive been an avid fantasy reader for a good 2 years, not counting Harry Potter, which i started reading in second grade or so. I guess the first epic fantasy series was, to my knowledge, The Sword of Truth series, which, from what ive gathered, seems to be rather hated in the fantasy community. Dunno why. Everyone has opinions.

I started reading the Wheel of Time right after i finished SoT, and it has since become my all time favorite book series.

Some of the bigger series's ive read since then are A song of Ice and Fire, I think im up to book 20 in the Drizzt saga, The Crimson Shadow saga, The first two demonwars saga books, Inheritance cycle, WOK(Was absolutely amazing.will be reading mistborn soon), Lord of the Rings(preferred the hobbit), and one of my other favorites The Kingkiller Chronicles.

And ive started other random fantasy series's that i have been unable to finish due to not having the books at the moment. Saga of recluce, Prince of thorns, Lord of the Isles(this one just bored me before i was a hundred pages in), etc. I am disappointed to say that i havent read the Shannara books yet, though i will get around to it.

Finally, im currently reading the Malazan books. Nearly halfway through Gardens of the Moon and am starting to enjoy it quite a bit. I would love any and all suggestions you all might have. I have a list that i keep all of the books i want to read on, though i do tend to ignore it sometimes.

Im sorry for the rather loooooooooooooooooooooooooong intro. I only have one other friend that i can talk to about fantasy, and he's usually busy with college, so its nice to be able to say all this stuff.

It's mostly Goodkind himself, though there are plenty of legitimate complaints about his books. As to why...an example.

Welcome.

It seems like a large proportion of these welcome threads contain a reference to Terry Goodkind (aka, The Yeard - Dav will probably call him that). It's like you have to see how shitty fantasy writing can be to appreciate how excellent the good stuff is.

Anyway, welcome!

Well it was the first epic fantasy i read. And no matter what goodkind says, it is fantasy. I figured it was worth mentioning.

It was one of the first I read too, and I liked it, for what it's worth. The WoT love overshadowed it, though, and then the internet colored my reading of his books (from 8 on), so by the time it got to the ending, I hated it. That was the worst ending I could have possibly imagined, and if I'd known anything about Atlas Shrugged I'd have seen it coming. Ugh.

At least i read Wheel of Time immediatley after it. So it wasnt my favorite for more than two or three days.

I still dont own Chainfire. If i get a book from the library, i tend not to buy them afterwards. Didnt get Towers of Midnight until yesterday.

I owned them all in hardback (most gotten from used bookstores), and gave them to an indie bookstore as a bribe to get TOM early. It wasn't a good bet, and I knew it, but I didn't care because it was Goodkind and I was glad to be rid of him. Ended up getting it early somewhere else, and the indie canceled my order because they learned they wouldn't get it even on release day. They voluntarily did that; I wouldn't have suggested it.

Im attempting to get all of the WOT hardbacks. Missing the first 3 and knife of dreams. But then these new covers are coming out and all that. I like the new ones quite a bit.

Didn't see Terry Pratchett on your list. You must give the Discworld a try. You'll only regret all the days you put off starting it.

And now...

Thanks for the welcome.

Does Atlas Shrugged actually have the same kind of "socialism rules after all" ending?
If so, then I really wonder why anyone would take such a hypocritical philosophy serious at all.

That would be more in line with what I know of Randian philosophy. The Goodkind ending was "I'll save all those who want to be saved but can't save themselves", after having spent oodles of books decrying precisely that kind of solution.

Charity is alright, so long as you don't pretend it's a virtue.

Thanks for the welcome.
Well when you do get there I recomend starting with Guards! Guards! (First City Watch book, Eighth DW book) or Moving Pictures (Tenth DW book). In the very first books especially Colour of Magic Pratchett's style is quite different from what it ultimately settles into. I consider every Discworld book a good read, but I know some people who gave up on the series because they didn't like Colour of Magic. They are completely free to not like that book or any book written by anyone for that matter but the style is so far from the other DW books that their decision to give up on the whole series becomes flawed. Guards! Guards! and Moving Pictures are much better indicators of what you are in for with the rest of the series and they do not spoil any of the previous books.
