Stumbled on this the other day.

I've assumed for a while that the name Lanfear was derived from the French l'enfer, "the inferno". Does anyone have any better sources? I know that for some of the other names such as Semirhage we just aren't sure.

Many of the most important characters' names are derived from several sources; it's kind of up in the air sometimes which ones are real influences and which ones are coincidental, depending on how many connections can be made, and how distinctive those connections are.

Semirhage sounds a lot like mirage; and considering she spent rather a lot of the time disguised as somebody else, I just assumed: self+mirage = Semirhage

That makes me think of an Asmodean/Apollo connection that I hadn't realized before

Semiramis would make quite a bit of sense. She was a semi-mythic Assyrian queen, whom the Greeks thought was the inventor of castration to create eunuchs.

He probably combined that with hemorrhage.

Concerning Lanfear.

I think it's interesting that, just like the moon, she tries to shine by reflecting someone/something greater.

Default Forsaken names

I've written an article on the names of Forsaken and Darkfriends. Names of the Shadow it is called.

The Lanfear parallels essay is here but is undergoing a major rewrite for AMOL. The Selene and other moon goddesses are there though. Also Hecate was an important parallel for Lanfear, and Lilith and various female demigods that haunt men. And Pandora, who let loose evil in the world. A Roman parallel is being added, also Inanna, and some more on Hel and Hellawes.

Lanfear was also quite similar to Milady, the villian of The Three Musketeers.
