Well, technically its not free as I am a tax-payer but I will never see a bill personally. I think the average tax payer would be up in arms for a lot of things if the IRS sent us a bill for each of the services we get from the Federal Gov't each year.

Odd...my bill comes due April 15, every year, for a lot of those services. The bill for the other services is due once a month or when I make a purchase.

Is it itemized though? I think an itemized bill would be cooler.

"Hmm, 75 cents for Congressional Junkets???, Cant say I agree with that."

You might not agree with it but you'd still have to pay it so what would be the point. They don't pay any attention when I tell them I don't want to pay for things.

I'm just curious is all. Besides, if things were itemized, people might actually give a crap about where their money is going.

Itemize it though and nothing will ever be paid for.

I, for example, don't want my money going to fight wars and police the world. Other people think that that is the ONLY way to spend tax money.

I, personally, think that POTUS is an extremely underpaid job - even if you count all the perks above and beyond salary. Why the hell would I want a job that ages me at like 2x the normal rate, where half the world will hate my guts on a good day, where I get blamed and burned in effigy for everything that goes wrong anywhere in the world? Especially when it would be easier to get a job as a major CEO where I could have a relative stress-free life running the company into the ground while making 10-20 times as much as POTUS makes WITH perks.

On the other hand, some folks are bitching that their tax dollars pay a modest salary to the most demanding job in the world (or at least one of them). For the record, as much bitching as I did about GWB I never complained that my tax dollars were paying his salary.

POTUS does get some pretty cool toys and perks though. AF1, Marine One, Camp David, 24 hour executive chef, security detail. Gets to meet every major sports champion, wins Nobel Prizes, etc etc.

Besides, ex-POTUS' seem to all live pretty long. Jimmy Carter's got to be like 90, Ford was pretty old when he went as were Reagan and Nixon. Must be that great healthcare they all get.

True. Im just thinking of the before and after pictures of Presidents. WAAAAY more than 8 years of aging. I guess life after office is pretty stress-free and conducive to long life.

But then, so is taking your 100's of millions that you bilked stockholders for to your private island in the mediterranean....

Dont have to work nearly as hard for that either

Has anyone read the ellinium by the eddings'es.

I would like a system like the republics. Hold a politicians belongings in escarow until after their term depending on how the country is doing will depend on how much of their stuff they will get back or how much is added to it.
