lol, I'm on the path of namedropping books today: Marc Ferro "The Use and Abuse of History" deals speficically with the teaching of history (=set of values) and the problems facing different countries/societies.

No. It was the Brits that wanted to get rid of the apostrophe, remember? Now, if you're talking about Real Americans....that's another thing altogether.

Ted Kennedy's original idea had some merits...it was just brutally transformed and mutated by Bush.

Focusing on what the world is instead of what it was is the first step.

Do you advocate that the teaching of history be scrapped from the school curriculum?

Dav... humans are not all the same and we don't all learn the same. You cannot put 30 kids in a class room and teach to the lowest common denominator and hope the smart kids aren't too bored to drop out.

That wasn't really Ted's original plan (that was what Bush turned it into). Having a minimal standard is important but you should still focus resources on the brighter students as well.

I find it ironic that we put far more attention/funding on the developmentally challenged students than we do the gifted ones...Honestly, morals aside, which group will contribute more to our society and the advancement of our race?

They were talking about this on the radio last night. Texas is so influential in textbooks because they are the second largest purchaser of textbooks in the country, behind California. However, this year or biennium or whatever, California will not be buying new textboooks because of financial woes. So, that makes Texas the biggest purchaser.

Since textbook publishing is an industry, publishers will publish books that cater to the largest demographic. Ergo, Texas has an enormous amount of influence over what gets in the textbooks for the next howevermany years.

Well didn't you know Dav? We all have to be equal, especially in results. And if we aren't, well then the system just isn't trying hard enough and we need to redistribute resources to those who aren't "as equal" to try harder even it means taking away from those who are "more equal" to do it.

Do we want everyone to get the same opportunity or do we actually want to advance as a society?

Focusing tons of resources ona a DS kid so that they can maybe get a job as a Wal-Mart greeter one day is a waste of resources IMHO.

Well, if he doesn't get the job at Wal-Mart, he'll just be a drain on our welfare resources.

Why don't we just get rid of him now?

I think he'll get that job regardless of whether we pay a couple hundred thousand on Special Ed teachers adn assistants in lieu of having a Gifted program.

How's this for stupid...

I live in a school district that is "Basic Aid." In California that means that the propoerty tax base is above a certain level, so instead of the state giving ~$6,000 per student, the State gives the basic level of $120 and the district gets to keep it's property tax money.

Well, two years ago the State said they weren't giving the $120 per student anymore to Basic Aid districts. That money was needed to patch holes in the State budget somewhere.

Well, last year the State said that Basic Aid districts had to pay their "fair share," which meant that not only did they not get their $120 per kid they had to pay the state a per-kid rate.

This year, that "fair share" rate is going up. It's going to go us next year too.

i have no friggin' clue how this is legal.
