I notice that someone has been keeping a tally at least.

EDIT: I think the funniest part was that I thought you had honesty seen that happen for a moment...then I realized you were kidding.

Is popcorn also a necessary part of European arthouse cinema?
I mean, it does seem that this is a somewhat specialised group, and that may play a role in the audience they draw.

I thought he was serious. But then, I'm from Mississippi. What I thought when I read it was, "Hmm, I didn't know people did stuff like that in Oregon too."

Oh, good, I wasn't the only one to think that for half a second.

Though the shopping cart was a giveaway.

I am happy to say I have not. Which is why the shopping cart was a giveaway. The theater people here wrestle anyone with those to the ground and take them away before letting them in the theater.

We don't allow shopping carts in our cinemas, because we're fascist bastards

Why in hell would anyone want to bring a shopping cart into a theater? Surely it's less comfortable than the seats.

Some people have kids that will never stop screaming if you try to make them get out of the shopping cart.

And people use shopping carts for all sorts of stuff in MS...

Did I mention how annoying I think people that put their 10 year old in a shopping cart are?

I would say that he is totally free to sell or not to sell whatever snacks he wants to try to peddle to his customers.

If a theater doesn't offer the precise type of snack that you're feeling peckish for, do you make a scene? Do you then really start screaming about fascism?

Come to think of it, a lot of movie theaters (maybe all of them) in the Netherlands (and the UK, though I've been in far fewer there) have a "only bought here" policy regarding snacks. That means that even if they sell popcorn, you can't buy a bag in a local supermarket and eat that while watching the movie. I think that's wrong, though I would not go so far as to call it fascist.
How about you, Ozymandias? Have you ever protested such a rule, and if not, why not? It could of course be because those rules do not exist in your country, in which case I'd be a bit jealous of that.
I don't know where the rest of you live, but I bring my own drinks or perhaps swedish fish into theaters all the time.

And Gonzo, I said that if its a problem in picking up the popcorn, then thats totally different. Its his choice as proprietor. But it smacks of a conspiracy to begin banning popcorn at all.

There is a difference between them not serving fresh baked chocolate chip cookies and popcorn. Popcorn is part of the moviegoing experience, at this point. And it reminds me too much of the trans-fat ban in california (which pisses me off a whole lot more).

I don't mind the "only-bought-here" mentality. There is a difference between saying "this is what we offer, choose" and "you can't have this". Its small, but an important distinction. Besides, in many ways, you can say that the profits from the popcorn go to paying staff to clean up the mess it leaves. If your bringing in popcorn from outside, your denying the theater valuable revenue while still bringing in the associated maintenance costs.
