Default Vroman's Bookstore, LACA Q&A video transcript

A friend of mine posted video of the Q&A on YouTube and on Facebook, and I transcribed the important bits. I have no idea why people ask the same lame questions at every Q&A!

Vroman's Bookstore, LA 17 November 2009 - Robert Moreau reporting

video link

Q: Was the Warder bond originally created to control male channelers?
A: RAFO.

Q: Do the Forsaken consider themselves Darkfriends?
A: Oooh, you are tricky! I know what you’re doing. I would say that, in general, yes they do consider themselves Darkfriends, though there are ways somebody would be able to get around that. I would say, yes, that that is not the sort of mental gymnastics that…it is very easy to convince yourself that you are not a Darkfriend.

Q: Will we see Nynaeve Heal the darkness that it in some of the male channelers before the Cleansing?
A: Nynaeve has said before, and believes, that everything can and should be able to be Healed, except for maybe death, and she certainly believes that it is possible. I’m not going to say whether or not it will happen.

Q: Rand is bonded to four people. If one of them was to die, what would be the effect on him?
A: We know that immediate bonding to someone else helps with the ‘Warder rage’ – it doesn’t completely get rid of it. I would say that your instincts are right, that it would help. I don’t think that it would negate everything.

Q: I got the impression from somewhere that the Aiel were a result of tampering, to some degree, with the One Power. Am I insane, or is that based in reality?
A: I have not heard that before.
Q: I don’t know where I got that from.
A: Yeah. I certainly haven’t heard anything to do with the One Power. There was tampering going on, but we’re talking more like Aes Sedai, things like that. The pillars that were left behind were obviously intended to do something, and the charges that were given to them….but it’s not necessarily like they were trying to make anything specific.

Q: Are the Aiel linked in some way to the Ogier, in that they both have that capability in making things grow, and that they and the Nym all worked together in the scene from the Age of Legends.
A: Well, everybody is connected in the Pattern, and certainly the Aiel would have threads connecting them to the Ogier. I can’t really say anything too specific about it.

EDIT: he finally put up the final two videos for this, so here's the finished transcript:

Q: If someone were to use balefire as a weapon, could they redirect it through a gateway, or would it destroy the weave and keep going?
A: Well, I happen to know that someone asked Robert Jordan this at a signing, and he gave a kind of glib answer that didn't answer anything. So, I'm going to RAFO that, and we'll see. There will be a lot of balefire in the future of these books. *much laughter* [There was some conversation here about that answer, and someone who claimed to be at that signing, and that RJ pretty much told the person 'Go get laid.' - Terez]

Q: Can someone besides Rand be taught to see the black cords that are seen on other Forsaken?
A: Robert Jordan is kind of dodgy on the black cords. A lot of people tried to pin him down on those. I think that yes, others could be trained to see the black cords.

Q: If the Forsaken were in a bubble all by themselves, who would win?
A: Ishamael. He's got the True Power.

Q: Does Mat's medallion work against all types of Power, or just against saidar? Because you know he said in the book, something to be free of Aes Sedai.
A: Yes, that is what he said specifically, but you know, Aes Sedai were both male and female once, and so we don't know yet, and I will have to RAFO that.
Another person from audience: But that was in book six.
Brandon: Was it in book six?
Audience: Yeah, that's where Aran'gar gets him with a weave.
Brandon: Oh, that's right; it did happen. You see, I know a lot of stuff....but I get in trouble if I say too much, because at one of the early signings....no, it wasn't even one of the signings; it was JordanCon. I was talking about....someone asked me a question, and I started answering, talking about, 'Do you remember that scene, where this happened, and this happened, and this happened....' and everyone started staring at me blankly. And I'm like, 'What? No...' and I argued with them that this scene existed. I promised them. No one remembered it! And about a month later, I realized as I was looking through it, 'Oh, it was a deleted scene from book seven.' Which now, in my head, is in book seven! And so I'm very careful not saying things I know, but you're right; that was proven in the books.

Aaaand that's it.

Interesting bits in this:

1. Seems to almost confirm that Mesaana got around the Oath against lying by believing she's not a Darkfriend.

2. .....except 'maybe' death, lol. I still don't think she'll Heal death though...

Who is to say if Mesaana has another Binder rod? Let alone maybe Mesaana considers herself a 'Friend of the Dark' rather than a 'Darkfriend'? Shrug.

--------------------------------------------

As I said, Terez about that Vroman bookstore signing which I unfortunately arrived 45 minutes late to, Brandon was as tight as a clam in his wording replies to answers to over 100 people he signed books for.

Pretty much, his emotional response after watching and listening to him for over an hour, is the best key to figuring if a questioner hit upon something important or not. At least in my view, he has changed his style and openness in replying to answers at gatherings (between Hero of Ages book tour to this tGS tour), because of his NDA with Harriet and TOR Inc. I assume. Of course, accuracy declines when he doesn't say things directly...similar to a polygraph test.

Well the forsaken are chosen not BA, that'd be demotion. And Friends of the Dark are people like Fain. Perhaps the three oaths need to reworded?

Whatever the wording, it'll be possible to get around it once the shadow knows of it.

There were two more videos that Robert put up for this signing, so the transcript has a few more questions added. Enjoy!

"There will be a lot of balefire in the future of these books."

Hmm, I not sure how I feel about this. Balefire is starting to get a little lame, especially after we've pretty much seen the biggest one we're going to see already.

Yes, the DO can transmigrate, but it takes a while to find a "suitable" body. We're getting pretty close to TG--if some of the Forsaken are killed near that last day, we could effectively write them off. It allows for more creative deaths.

It's getting lame? lol...it is what it is. It's been used far less than lightning, as a Power weapon. I have a feeling that balefire will have some plot importance in the next couple of books.

Lightning is lame as well. Rand and the Forsaken have all that access to AOL killing weaves (Arrows of Fire, Deathgates, etc.) and defensive weaves (Rand's "cocoon," etc).

Time to spread some knowledge. And all Rand's done is teach the Asha'men balefire.

Eh, maybe I'm just expecting too much. I don't doubt the plot importance of balefire, I'm just doing some wishful thinking.

The lightning thing is so annoying. 3,500 years of conflict and the best current day AS can come up with is Lighting strikes and fireballs.

Pretty weak.

Well, Rand accidentally taught them all those weaves during the attack at Algarin's, so I'm sure they'll be used. Balefire has a very specific purpose, and that's why he made sure to teach it to Narishma.

He should stop by the Black Tower and "show" Taim these new weaves as well. Afterall, the Ashaman area weapon made for the Last Battle. It would make sense, right?

If he went back there to teach, Taim would get all pissy about Rand not respectin' his authoritah

lol, do you want to make the argument he's not a Darkfriend one more time for old time's sake? I figure there will be no argument after Towers of Midnight.

I have a feeling that Taim already knows some nifty weaves that Rand might not even know. Well, I dunno about now. We'll see how much of Lews Therin he remembers next book.

The Asha'man are a bit more creative, if being utilitarian in simply getting to the point of it can be called creative...(Talkin' Dumai's Wells.)

Perhaps it is Logain, not Taim, who is the Darkfriend. That would be an interesting plot twist, wouldn't it?

There isn't really much to add for the last 3 books, except for his token appearance in KOD...which btw, everyone should remember that not all is as it appears...

I don't think there is enough new info to support my argument for a new thread, so I will reply here. Seeing as how we have an example of one person going undercover to bring down the Shadow, why not another (except for plot repetitiveness anyway)? Not that I believe Taim and Verin were working together. But who knows? My first thread on TL was about Verin being a black ajah hunter so we will see, maybe lightning strikes 2x, eh?

Ultimate plot twist: Rand is a Darkfriend...Taim is the true Dragon Reborn.

All of Rand's POVs are misleading due to the Taint. Taim is really the champion of the Light.

I smell a faction!!!
