Default Saffron Thread

So, are there any TLers that have experience cooking with saffron? There's a couple dishes I would like to try making (paella and some other rice based dishes) but I'd like some tips before tossing down $30 for a couple grams of a spice.

The floor is open to your collective wisdom.

I'm not going to lie, I immediately thought this thread was about her. I figured she was on some new show Davian watched. *shrug*

All I've ever seen Saffron used for is turning rice yellow and delicious.

That was my first thought as well. I was looking for Captain Reynold's wife

Sorry Dav but my cooking usually involves eggs, mac and cheese, and toast

Edit: Not all at once of course

He spends $30 on a few bits of a spice, then burns it following a recipe he's never seen before, then tries eating anyway because he spent the money damnit, trust me. The level of hell he will be on will be special.

Wish I could help, Davian, but my cooking specialty is charcoal. I've managed to produce it with ingredients from every food group, granted, which took a lot of doing with dairy let me tell you. Still, my white thumb is sorely lacking.

I use saffron occasionally, but I find that when I'm actually trying recipes for the first time, it works almost as well without the more expensive ingredients. I have made paella without saffron pefore, and it was actually very nice.

Not sure what to suggest, other than that you try to avoid the cheap stuff, because you might as well not use any at all in that case.

I'm with Anaiya on this. Most likely you don't even need it. I've used it a few times and it really wasn't worth the money, for the cost of the spice I was figuring I oughta be shittin out gold flakes the next day...didn't happen though.

Doesn't Saffron usually cook for you, instead of with you? Then she kisses you and steals your ship...

Dav, you can typically buy 1-5 strands for significantly less than $30, and that's all you'll need for one recipe. Don't they have a "Bulk Barn"-esque place in VT?

Start with rice. Hard to screw up and very tatsy with saffron.
