Default New posts indicator

If I have read all new posts in a forum, and then I go back to the main level, the forum indicator should be "no new posts". But that does not happen, it still shows as though there are new things to read. Only when I go back into that forum and leave it again, does it get updated so that it shows I have read everything.

I have a guess what causes this, though it is possible that guess is plain wrong. It may be that the update of the status in the database only happens after you have left, instead of before. I'm not sure it is possible to change this, of course, but you could look into it.

I have the same problem, but only sometimes, and I especially have had problems with the Egwene poll not wanting to admit that I've read it. I know that you have to go from the thread to the forum page before it will mark the thread read - if you go directly from the thread to the main page, then it won't be marked read until you view the forum page. But with the Egwene thread, I can view every page of it and the poll results too, and it will still view as new on the forum page until I go back into it and then back to the forum page again.

I only have that problem when working from a search results list. that and it shows any new posts by me as unread posts.

The problem is inherent in this version of vBulletin and has been fixed in newer releases (along with a few NEW bugs to irritate people. )

Important question, then: is an update a major overhaul, or a simple thing to implement?

I don't know. I've never done a vBulletin installation or update myself -- they're supposed to be plug&play for the most part, but the upgrade from this version to the latest version at my-other-home-on-the-web generated some confusion among the users because there are some fundamental differences in the way the latest version manages newpost searches and other things -- i.e. old bookmarks and old links/shortcuts no longer worked because the syntax changed.

It would cause a lot of problems for the database forum if the database were up and running, but it wouldn't necessarily be a big deal for Tam & co otherwise.

Well, since we're graced with an ample lack of running database, I don't think there is much of a risk.

Of course, if something does go wrong, it's Tam's fault.

Right, it's better to do an update now while no one's really used to the way this version works.

Especially since the newest release features "Multi-quote" capability. It makes replying to several posts at once much easier.

Yeah, I've seen that at another board, but apparently it doesn't work with the default skin.

Yeah, it does -- at least with the "vBUlletin 3 Default" Skin configured at my-other-home-on-the-web it does.

It's a bit quirky if you tag some posts for possible replies as youread through a thread and then decide the points youwanted to make have already been made by others -- Then it saves those tagged posts and tries to add them to the next reply you do make.

It's still very useful even with the quirks because the way it tags quotes in the posts included a link back to the original post they came from. (The "quote=[name]" function is expanded to "quote=[name];[post#]"

Yeah, I usually type my quote tags, so I probably won't use multi-quote much, but the link in the name can be useful when you're talking about something that was said a couple of pages ago.

For some reason, after I've been on TL for awhile, all the threads will automatically mark themselves read, with no regard to whether they have actually been read or not.

Yeah, it does that if you leave one of your forum pages open for a long time.

If you spend more than 15(?) minutes reading a thread or composing a post, vBulletin automatically logs you out and resets your last visit time. When it resets the last vist, that also sets the "last read" pointer, which is actually a "New Since Your Last Visit" pointer.

vBulletin only tracks read/not read within the "new since last visit" posts.

So, does that mean that if I'm continuously active on the site for an indefinite period of time then I won't get timed out?

But if I spend more then 15 minutes inactive on the site, I do get timed out?

Yep, as long as vBUlletin has to send you a new page or refresh an old page, it knows you're still around and it will wait for fifteen minutes -- or whatever time Tam has set for timeouts, because it is configurable.

The only exception is the "Mark Forums Read" link on the Quicklinks menu -- that forces vBUlletin to reset you last vist time so everything is considered "read" or "ignored" -- unlike exzboard though, vBUlletin uses the time of the request rather than the time the link was formatted (the last time the page was refreshed) as the new "last visit" time.

Of course, this presumes you checked "remember me" when you logged in so that vBulletin relogs you in if you do time out. If you don't check "Remember Me" you have to re-enter your username and password to post the magnum opus you've been working on for a half-hour or so.

All of the other forums I go to do this. It's annoying, but I've gotten used to it, and since I don't post from work, it's rarely a problem for me. I imagine it would be if I was working though.

I just open any threads I'm that interest me in individual new windows and then let the last visit pointer time out as I red through them if it needs to.

ezBoard's last read pointers were really the only thing I liked about that system.

Yes, it was also nice to be able to mark individual forums read, though phpBB boards offer that option as well (two forums I visit fairly regularly are phpBB). But both vBulletin and phpBB do the time-out thing. Yuku did as well, if I'm not mistaken.
