Default Chapter 1 - Discuss

It's out people

http://www.orbitbooks.net/towersofmidnight/

All I can say is, Egwene and Rand are going to have a meeting. Even Rand knows she will be angry about what he says.

Oh, and I don't know about you - but I found this most interesting:
"Almen thought— for a moment— he could see something around the man. A lightness to the air, warped and bent."
It's similarity to the Dark aura, and Rands uber-good ta'veren effect makes me wonder if one of the consequences of using the TP Brandon mentioned is that it somehow makes a ta'veren more ta'veren...

Good first chapter

I know spoilers are obvious but I read the first post to make sure it was "real" so I want to be careful for people who might do the same thing.

So, slight spoilers:

Calm, hippie Randypoo talking to self-assured Egweener is going to be, as the great Verin would say, "...interesting."

and this gave me a huge smile: "I doubt she will be pleased by what I tell her.”

The Dragon is one with the Land.

A lone beacon of light at this point. Egwene better realize this and get over herself. Rand is basically Christlike at this point.

I do know you, Almen said, remembering an odd pair of youths he had given a lift in his cart years ago.
I'm guessing Almen is the farmer from tEotW who gave Rand and Mat a lift. I remember Brandon mentioning he got to name a character that appeared in an earlier volume but never had a name.

Here's a quick thought I just had: Rand WILL die obviously and his death is key to defeating the DO. That's the trick that LTT never figured out. LTT tried to defeat him and live. Rand will use his own self-sacrifice to save the land from the DO's touch.

Rand will die...and it is okay.

Bunt always had a name.

Quote:
Bunt went right on talking, flicking the reins whenever his horse slowed but otherwise letting his hands rest on his knees. “I’m a good Queen’s man, like I said, but even fools say something worthwhile now and again. Even a blind pig finds an acorn sometimes. There’s got to be some changes. This weather, the crops failing, cows drying up, calves and lambs born dead, or with two heads. Bloody ravens don’t even wait for things to die. People are scared. They want somebody to blame. Dragon’s Fang turning up on people’s doors. Things creeping about in the night. Barns getting burned. Fellows around like that friend of Holdwin, scaring people. The Queen’s got to do something before it’s too late. You see that, don’t you?” Rand made a noncommittal sound.

Should be interesting.

Rand: I'm going to come use your Aes Sedai, please.

It's just to show that Rand isn't being horrible anymore, because of what happened on DM. It's nothing to do with the TP. Of course, I never thought the dark aura around Rand had anything to do with the TP either.

Well, now. If Rand can get over his "Oh, woe is me, I must die, I must be hard, boo hoo hoo" jag, then there is hope for Perrin, too.

I think it's going to be more like

Rand: "Taim's kinda dangerous. In fact, he might be a darkfriend. You should probably stay away from him."

Egwene: "Maybe you should have told me that before a bunch of Aes Sedai were sent to talk to him."

Rand: It slipped my mind.

Egwene: I am angry.

First reaction.

I didn't like it a bit.

The mere presence of the Dragon suddenly makes things alright? Like make lost apples grow instantaneously back to tree? There simply is nothing to support this kind of phenomenon in the series so far. DO corruption is fine and even the farmers feelings of better and such are fine, but physical things....

Really. This is getting out of hand.

The Pattern is weakening and Rand's ta'veren effect is now massively powerful. Remember, the Dragon is one with the land. Its the same phenomenan that occurred in tEotW after Rand's victory in the Gap. The foundation for such an ability was set down then.

Its just as "natural" as all the apples falling off the tree and rotting overnight for example.

Besides, we've seen multiple examples of this happening through other forms. The Green Man could do it, treesinging, cropsinging, etc. Its always been an ability present. Perhaps this is part of Rand rediscovering "the Song" through his Aiel roots.

Very nice... I always get choked up when people convincingly hit rock bottom, give up, lay down to die, and then...get up and carry on. Nicely done.

The meeting will go well, Egwene will take her turn being a bully, and it will wash off of Rand who will then convince her that now is the time for the Ashaman to move into the White Tower as equals

Rand on Dragonmount was the best writing of the entire Series. Major kudos to RJ and BS for such a convincing portrayol. I cannot wait for this book to come out now.

I suspect the Asha'man will move into what was going to be Elaida's Tower. The irony is just too delicious.

It was rather nice of her to build them such a nice home. I do feel bad for the Warders though...afterall, they lost their exercise field.

Interesting to see the opposite side of the coin as far as the Dragon being tied to the land.

He sound different, which must come from he reintegration...I wonder how much of LTT is now Rand.

By the way - I got the feeling, when I read it, that Rand was saying he needed to go speak with the Amyrlin, something he had avoided doing - he doesn't know Egwene is there yet right?

Some questions:

Was LTT this connected to the land in the end of the Age of Legends?

Does his strength and connection for good regarding the Land, have anything to do with his connection to the Dark One?

His personality is different. How much of Rand is now LTT?

What other changes will we see?

It isn't ta'veren. Ta'veren is part of the pattern, and "it is neither good nor evil." If it had anything to do with his ta'verenness then one of the apples would have launched itself at Bunt's son and given him a brain injury.

This big-happy-positive-effect is from the Dragon being one with the land, which is different than his being ta'veren. It follows his moods. Dark Rand caused the food to spoil immediately in Arad Doman. (The clearest sign that it was directly from Rand was when Nynaeve's tea spoiled right when she saw the dark aura around him).

I'm under the impression he does, because of the grimace. Even though it doesn't make sense that he already knows.
