A smaller sci-fi and fantasy convention.

Unless Mrs. Dark is called to a birth, I plan to be there. Anyone else attending? SBX? Therilon? Anyone?

We haven't heard from Therilon in quite a while and I haven't heard of this little con before you just mentioned it here. Money is a bit of a problem...and $50 is a little much to meet Ed the Sock.

Default Can-Con review!

Had great fun at Can-Con this weekend, concentrating on the writing panels and workshops as usual.

Highlights were interacting with Julie E. Czerneda http://www.czerneda.com/ and J.M. Frey
http://jmfrey.net/

Also enjoyed meeting and asking questions of a great deal of the sci-fi and fantasy writing community located near Ottawa, many in similar situations as I, trying to or having recently broken into the industry.

I left with a sense of fulfillment and confidence. I think my story-writing is 95% on target, aside from the fact that I need to sit at the keyboard more often.

In one of my 'finer' moments I asked a question at an extremely well-attended gender roles panel that seemed to turn many angry eyes my way. I noted that we had discussed love and relationships aspects of gender portrayal, but had not talked about the fact that half of us can carry children and half can't, and how that affects portrayal, but it must have come out wrong, and certainly touched a raw nerve. I find it ironic that discussion of a person as one of 13supposed gender-relation possibilities garners less negative feedback than discussing a female character carrying a baby, which might be a logical outcome of several of these gender relationships. Of course, no one in the room knows that Mrs. Dark attends births for a living, and her insight may have made me a little knowledgeable... for a man. I got a strong impression that almost no female wants to read about breeding, or read portrayals of people who actually want to have children. But multi-variate sex is OK with these same open-minded readers. Anyway, writers take note about this potential taboo that might be perceived as totally undermining your strong female characters. (have I unleashed the same ire here? Discuss away!)

Anyway, total attendance was about 125, which made for dynamic discussions with a fairly tightly-knit local group of fans and writers, and lots of opportunity for side chats with out of town writers. A local CON you don't have to dish out for overnight accomodations is highly worthwhile for aspiring writers and artists.

World Fantasy Convention is in Toronto Nov 1-4 2012. More in another post.

Default Ne pas JordanCon

I usually travel to Philadelphia twice a year, in spring and fall, on arbitrarily assigned dates given out a month in advance. I had previously looked into how crazy it would be to drive to Atlanta from Philly, just in case the dates worked out.

It is 13 hours of crazy.

However, I also go to Washington on arbitarily assigned days every two years or so. That would make it only 9 hours of crazy. Each way.

So I am probably out for JordanCon, and maybe WorldCon Chicago 2012 as well, since I have an equally big con much closer to home. One which Ishara has no excuse for missing.
