I had forgotten about this:

"If only there was some way you could show me! But you will describe it. You must! I will give you all the gold I possess, bear your child, whatever you wish, but you will tell me all that you can." Apparently not sure herself whether she was commanding or begging, she led a very bemused Flinn over by the windows. He opened his mouth more than once, but she was too busy trying to make him talk to see it.
That's funny. And he ended up with Corele, presumably because Samitsu already had a Warder and Yellows can only have one.

Back to Mat and the Sea Folk, reading it in context was fun. I'd forgotten that Elayne and Nynaeve got him to deal with the Sea Folk because they wanted him to ta'veren them. They were just staring at him, waiting to see what he would do.

"Which you do not need to know," Nynaeve put in firmly, flipping her braid back over her shoulder with a practiced toss of her head that made the gold ring bounce on her bosom. Lan must be insane. "I must say, I never expected you to do what you did. Whatever in the world made you think of trying to bully them? You could have ruined everything."

"What’s life if you don’t take a chance now and then?" he said blithely. As well by him if they thought it was planned instead of temper. But they had used him again without telling him, and he wanted a bit back for that. "Next time you have to make a bargain with the Sea Folk, let me make it for you. Maybe that way, it won’t turn out as badly as the last one." Spots of color blooming in Nynaeve’s cheeks told him he had hit the mark squarely. Not bad shooting blindfolded.
And this is of course just after Rand's bargain with them, which went well until Rand got claustrophobic.

Perhaps the first clue:

Adeleas and Vandene, hands tightening on their skirts, appeared to struggle with hatred for the woman who had been their sister and betrayed them. Of all the Aes Sedai present, only Careane was not mentioned.

Not many people told jokes involving Aes Sedai; telling one might not be entirely safe. The merchant and the Cargomaster found an ordinary rock on the shore and proceeded to sell it back and forth between them, somehow making a profit each time. Then an Aes Sedai came along. The Domani convinced the Aes Sedai to buy the simple stone for twice what she herself had last paid. After which the Atha’an Miere convinced the Aes Sedai to buy the same rock from him for twice that again. Only a joke, but it showed what people believed. Maybe the older sisters would not have done any better bargaining with the Sea Folk.

There is always some debate as to whether Sammael was telling the truth about the binder only working on women, but I think this is a hint that he was lying:

After all, if Caddar had lied in one thing, maybe he had lied in others.
Not that Sevanna necessarily has a clue what she's talking about, but it was a way for RJ to at least plant the suggestion that Sammael wasn't telling the truth, in case we assumed that he had.

TPOD 12 is a good example of Graendal being not very smart. It didn't even occur to her that Lanfear was Cyndane, even knowing what the name means, and before she was close enough to sense Cyndane's strength. Since she was the second person to swear to the Dark One after Ishamael, surely she knows about transmigration? Osan'gar did not appear to be particularly surprised when it happened to him, and Aran'gar was just pissed because he was a girl. And then it didn't occur to her that Moridin might possibly be Ishamael, even after learning he had been named Nae'blis. Moghedien did the same, but she's not supposed to be very smart.

An interesting thing about New Alliances is that it's half Graendal and half Cadsuane. A Forsaken and a Lightsider, both of them opening their POVs with something masterful. In Graendal's case, it was the care she took with the orders to Ituralde (from Alsalam) and the ease with which she overcame Moghedien and Cyndane, not that Moghedien was doing anything other than summoning Shaidar Haran. But underneath that, she's underestimating both Cyndane and Moridin.

With Cadsuane, her masterful actions included setting Daigian and Kumira on Rand's pet Aes Sedai apprentices, but she made a major miscalculation with Sorilea, I think. Verin also miscalculated, but as she said, it was a minor miscalculation at worst.

Read again:

Quote:
Graendal kept her own face smooth, with a little effort. She had supposed this girl some Friend of the Dark whom Moghedien had picked up to run errands, perhaps a noble who thought her title counted, but now that she was close. . . . The girl was stronger in the One Power than she herself! Even in her own Age, that had been uncommon among men, and very rare indeed among women.
Till Graendal felt her ability, she assumed she was a Darkfriend who couldn't channel. When she did feel her ability, she obviously knew right away she was weaker than Lanfear had been.

Why would she assume that if Ishamael had been brought back after his death (read failure), he would immediately be Nae'blis? Remember that all the Foresaken think Nae'blis is about being the DO's most successful Chosen. None of them knows Ishy was Nae'blis for an entirely different reason.

"She even managed to stalk down the ladder."

It's fun trying to picture that... I'm surprised Nynaeve didn't fall into the river.

Graendal's speciality seems to be outguessing others. Her problem here is that her skills are not sufficient to let her outguess the DO, so naturally she then fails to draw conclusions that (to us) are obvious.

I'd always read that as emphasising how arrogant/stupid Sevanna is rather than emphasising Sammael as a liar.

Sevanna might be arrogant and stupid, but she was right that Caddar lied to her about some things, and right that he probably lied about others.

No doubt about that, but do we even know if the OR in the Tower works on men?

Now I'm wondering: whatever it is that Sammael had which could control a man, was that destroyed with Natrin's Barrow?

I always assumed he was referring to the sad bracelets, even though they were confiscated by the Seanchan and obviously ended up with Semirhage. But that's assuming he had anything at all. It doesn't make much sense.
