Default Mat's memories of multiple generals

Now, I'm sure this has been discussed hundreds of times and it's in the books, but unfortunately I don't have most of them right now and I'm not sure where exactly to look for.

How did Mat get the memories of the best generals of the age. I believe it was after he went through the portal in Ruideen and asked for 3 wishes? What were exactly these wishes?

Also, where did his luck come from?

And if there's some other info, related to the topic, please enlighten me.

Gateway in Rhuidean..."I want these holes in my memory filled"..."DONE"

On the luck...good question as its always been up for debate. I say its mainly his ta'vereness coming through while others argue it was holding the Dagger for so long or something Lanfear did or the DO, etc etc.

Mat's luck is likely the ta'verenness has Davian said, and the dice in his head. Each of the three had it seem to manifest in a different way.

The other two wishes were a way to get away from Aes Sedai influence (I can't remember the phrasing right now), which gave him the fox amulet and the last wish was "Let me out", or something to that effect. If he hadn't wished himself out, he'd probably have died in 'finn-land and Rand would never have found him.

There's been notes to the effect that he also got his Ashandarei or however you spell it for the third wish; as a means to get out; however it's not exactly what he asked. Then again, he didn't really get what he meant for the other things he asked for either.

Dead silence. He could hear himself breathing, hear the blood throbbing in his ears. "I have no intention of marrying. And I have no intention of dying, either, whether I am supposed to live again or not. I walk around with holes in my memory, holes in my life, and you stare at me like idiots. If I had my way, I would want those holes filled, but at least answers to my questions might fill some in my future. You have to answer !" "Done," one of the men growled, and Mat blinked.

Done? What was Done? What did he mean? "Burn your eyes," he muttered. "Burn your souls! You are as bad as Aes Sedai. Well, I want a way to be free of Aes Sedai and the Power, and I want to be away from you and back to Rhuidean, if you will not answer me. Open up a door, and let me " "Done," another man said, and one of the women echoed, "Done."

So, Mat's memories give him knowledge of battles, of dancing, of songs, etc., but how come he still writes like an uneducated country bumpkin? That never made sense to me.

Nitpick: he didn't. He did not get Hawkwing's memories, for instance.

Instead, he got a whole bunch of battle field experience from a great variety of perspectives, and that information combined with his own innate ability allowed him to learn far quicker than would have been possible if he had had to gather all that data himself.

He probably never bothered to try to use the writing skills from his "other memories".
He did do so when it came to dancing, but dancing, with or without spears, is a form of combat.

There's no indication that he was especially skilled at cooking either, though he had the memories of lots of cooks (some good, many probably bad). Same for carpentry, smithing, and so forth.

It should also be noted that everyone Mat got memories from stepped through either the door that was in Mayene, or the Tower of Ghenji. It was a self selecting group of people with sufficient bravery and intelligence, IE generals.

Also, Brandon hinted that back in the day people where able to trade objects of the power for questions/wishes outside the scope of the treaty, hence the finn's having exactly what Mat wanted.

Not all of his memories were from generals; there was at least one ordinary soldier in the lot that I remember. Still, to that list of "sufficient bravery and intelligence", I would definitely add "and sufficient competence" too, since being brave and intelligent can still get you killed if you don't manage to get away with what you are doing.
