Default silly question

Mats medallion.

If he had somehow gotten it earlier....could he have just walked in and taken callandor?

Also, my autocorrect turns callandor into calls for. That oft used phrase.

The weaves protecting Callandor are almost certainly unique. A ward attuned to a specific soul? And the weavers knew of gholam.

The argument could be made that the only path that led to victory had Rand reaching it first, but Mat would almost certainly pass the thing along, and rand would have gotten it. Assuming Rand and Mat went to Rhuidean first, Sammael would have more time to find and unleash the gholam

As we know from the experiments conducted by Aes Sedai on the way to Ebou Dar, Mat's medallion only protects him from weaves themselves, not their side- or after-effects. Therefore, while Mat might be able to happily breeze through a ward designed to freeze anyone but the Dragon Reborn in place, he would have had no protection against a ward causing an explosion, triggered by the proximity of anyone but the Dragon Reborn. Depending on how fiendish the designers were, they could even have got around the effect of the medallion/Gholam by simply using pressure plates to activate the wards, which would have needed to rely on the One Power only for the "is it Rand?" check and their effects.

So what?
There were no gholam available in the time between the making of the Stone and when Rand finally got the Sword.

Maybe the gholam could have managed when Rand and Sammael were stalking each other, but then again, if that was tried and Rand was ready for it, that might have cost Sammael the gholam. The simple fact that this assassin was not send after Rand shows that Sammael did not expect the gholam to be a match for LTT, and that is enough to explain why it stayed away from Tear.

When mats medallion touches a weave it dissolves. I don't think we have seen any evidence of the dissolving weaves still producing effects.

The experiments while travelling involved throwing stuff at him and making his footing unstable. I am not sure if they placed wards in front of him and had him walk into them.

There are a number of questions surrounding Callandor. You could use a gateway to breach the barrier, unless it has some dreamspike effect. But even so, if you shrunk yourself in TAR, you might be able to pass through, then open a gateway to the real world.

Even if there were no gholam at the time, the effect existed, the weavers knew of it, and it was made by a human. They should have at least consixered it.

Perhaps they did, and Sammael lost his "other gholam" finding out that sending it for Callandor didn't work.

Just because we haven't seen it doesn't mean it would be hard to arrange -- a weave holding up the roof of the Stone would make an admirable trap for anyone or anything canceling the OP in that area.

Or holding antimatter in a weave produced vacuum.

Still, any trap that doesn't destroy Callandor could be sprung, and the rubble could be searched later. Any trap that did destroy Callandor could be sprung and deemed worth the price.

But maybe the weave creates a powerful repelling force in a small area. That way it would still keep Mat back, almost like a weave creating a gust of wind. You could be affected without touching the source weave

Or maybe Callandor wasn't in the Stone until the Dragon reached for it, and just had its image projected there from somewhere else (bottom of the ocean, skimming space, Sindhol).

Do we know what would happen if someone else reached for it? Was there a barrier, or did thir fingers just pass through?

Read and find out:

"The Sword That Is Not a Sword, though there's precious few knows what it is. But none can touch it save one. They saw to that, who put it here. The Dragon Reborn will hold Callandor one day, and prove to the world he's the Dragon by doing it. The first proof, anyway. Lews Therin come back for all the world to see, and grovel before. Ah, the High Lords don't like having it here. They like nothing to do with the Power. They'd rid themselves of it, if they could. If they could. I suppose there's others would take it, if they could. What wouldn't one of the Forsaken give, to hold Callandor?"
Of course, this is in TAR, but there doesn't seem to be any reason to think that it would be different in the normal world. After all, Callandor had been where it was for over 3,000 years already, which is plenty time to make a solid impression on the World of Dreams.
