Default Remember this as*hole?

Yeah, he epitomizes everything that is wrong both with capitalism, and with the health care industry.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/dandiamo...prices-higher/

Quote:
Martin Shkreli hasn’t changed.

If anything, the provocative pharmaceutical CEO — who became “the most hated man in America” earlier this year — thinks he didn’t go far enough when he hiked the price of Daraprim by more than 5,000% overnight.

“ I would have raised prices higher,” Shkreli vowed on Thursday, after being asked how he would re-do the past three months. “That’s my duty.”
Quote:
In rapid succession, Shkreli explained why he’d abandoned his previous pledge to cut the price of Daraprim, claimed that companies were still “begging” for his business, and argued that he was being railroaded by politicians. Shkreli also reiterated that his company, Turing Pharmaceuticals, was forced to hike the price of Daraprim because of the distribution model.
Quote:
But at Thursday’s summit, Shkreli was painfully clear: His job isn’t making patients better. It’s making the most dollars.

“My shareholders expect me to make the most profit,” Shkreli said, a theme that he returned to again and again. “That’s the ugly, dirty truth.”

“I’m going to maximize profits,” Shkreli added later. “That’s what people [in healthcare] are afraid to say.”
This is why I'm a socialist. This is why it's we on the left that should be pissed with the pathetic attempt to fix healthcare that Obama gave us. Not the right. What he passed is exactly the kind of pro-pharma, pro-hospital, pro-doctor, anti-consumer bullshit that the conservatives wanted.

Actually I'd say he's a villain through whom the world ends up slightly better. You see while what he does is wrong it is so obviously wrong that everyone will see that the laws that allow this are a problem that needs to be dealt with, while a whole lot of other bastards have managed to overprice their stuff without getting in the public radar. I don't know if he is doing this on purpose or not, but think of him as that point in a flu just before the high fever (law reforms) that eventually drives away the disease.

The optimism is strong with this one.

Sometimes gonzo your cynicism is like a compass needle pointing south. You are so afraid of being naive that you believe in the exact opposite and thus you are still ruled by it.

Sometimes it is, but I doubt this is one of those cases.

Besides, once the magnetic poles of the Earth switch around, which is bound to happen soon (ie. in the next few millennia), my compass will point right and everyone else's will be wrong. Thus I am simply a bit ahead of my time.

Well the point was that you still believe the map is reliable so long as you can tell which way round it should be.

This guy is a POS.

His main problem is how he is doing interviews and coming out and publicly announcing the stuff he is doing.

There are tonnes of pharmaceutical companies making billions of dollars off patented medicine that are too expensive for joe bloggs to afford. The difference? They remain tight lipped and send out circulars saying "Patent Laws dictate....." and "research costs...." etc.

Now, is he an irredeemable scumbag? yes.

Should he be shot? No.

Is he the worst offender? No.

Kinda side with Gonzo on this one.

Since the brouhaha, he lowered the price but has been raising it again now that nobody cares. As mentioned, the public tends to view this as a one-off, rather than the rule that it is.

Look how hard it is to clean up systemic corruption in our police forces. Every city, it seems, has a culture of coverups and corruption. We may eventually turn that around with sustained effort and focus.

But Wall Street? Police have zero power compared to Wall Street. And Wall Street has zero visibility compared to the cops. Will never change

Unrelated to his unethical recent activities. Those should have been treated as criminal actions too, there was after all no difference between what he did and run-of-the-mill extortion other than of course access to lobbyists to bribe officials so as to keep what they are doing treated as evil, but legal. Nonetheless, this is what he is being charged with...

Quote:
He was charged in a seven-count indictment unconnected to the drug price hikes imposed by his company. The charges instead involve his actions at another drug company, Retrophin, which he ran as CEO from 2012 to 2014.

The indictment said Shkreli and others orchestrated three interrelated fraud schemes from 2009 to 2014. It said they fraudulently induced investors to sink their money into two separate funds and misappropriated Retrophin's assets to satisfy Shkreli's personal and professional debts.

Shkreli "engaged in multiple schemes to ensnare investors through a web of lies and deceit," U.S. Attorney Robert Capers said in a statement.

A second defendant, lawyer Evan Greebel, of Scarsdale, New York, was charged with conspiracy. It was not immediately clear who would represent him. If convicted, both men could get up to 20 years in prison.
Twenty years, probably any years, is likely wishful thinking. Of course if there was any true justice, this schmuck and the dentist who murdered the lion would be fighting each other for our entertainment in the Colosseum.

According to Wikipedia, Retrophin filed a $65 million lawsuit against Shkreli back in August, and criminal investigations against him and his former colleagues have been going on since January. Evidently those investigations have turned up enough evidence to arrest him. So yeah, well before the Daraprim sh!t hit the news, the dude was already in trouble. And he also looks like an intolerable douche. Not that I am prone to judge by appearance or anything...

So he was using the legal option of hiking up the prices to make his customers pay for the fraud he earlier committed in order to pay for whatever debts he had then. Makes one wonder what he will come up with to pay the debts he's incurring right now, doesn't it?
To be continued ...

Its almost as if he's just a giant asshole and its all coming back to roost now. Maybe he'll break now that he's been caught and blow his brains out. That happens sometimes with people in that mental state.

Unfortunately he seems too narcissistic, and cognitively dissonant, for that.

After the hearing Mr Shkreli returned to Twitter to call the members of Congress "imbeciles".
Turing's chief commercial officer Nancy Retzlaff did answer Congress's questions.
She told the House hearing that Turing acquired Daraprim because it was "priced far below its market value" and that the company planned to invest the profits from the price hike into research and development of new treatments.
This was also a nice touch...

Quote:
After the hearing Mr Shkreli's attorney told reporters that Mr Shkreli, a former hedge fund manager, was a "brilliant scientist who had saved many lives."
Some people really need to be made into an example, something which unfortunately never occurred with the banking scandal. Men like Shkreli, more than anything else, are what strikes me as what is behind the appeal of Bernie Sanders.
