Default And you thought U.S. politics were crazy...

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/28/wo...-sil.html?_r=0

Granted, South Korea does not have nearly as long a Democratic tradition as the U.S., but neither have we, as far as I am aware, elected a president who was affiliated with the leader of a religious cult, and who is BFFs with the cult leader's daughter and successor.

And this is just what the American news is reporting, because 1) Americans don't generally care about Korea unless there's something wrong with the gadgets and cars we import, and 2) the rest of the story sounds like conspiracy theory. But you gotta hear the rest of the story, because it is absolutely craaazy, as told by my wife, who is Korean and has been reading the Korean news:

Korean media is theorizing that President Park Geun-hye may have somehow orchestrated the sinking of the Sewol Ferry in 2014 (~300 high school kids died) as part of a cult ritual of human sacrifice by drowning, which the cult believed would bring their former cult leader back to life. So yeah, it totally sounds like a conspiracy theory, but who knows?

Anyway, I had no idea South Korea was so messed up. I mean, I knew it had problems just like every other country, but not this kind of problem... My wife says the reason this woman was elected was because she is the daughter of the former authoritarian president Park Chung-hee, even though he was assassinated when she was very young, and she became attached to a crazy man. Apparently the voters were feeling nostalgic that year because of the weak economy.

Any Theorylanders out there from a country with an even more bizarre political landscape than South Korea?

Cool in a totally messed up glad-I-don't-live-there kind of way.

Sort of related: Lithuania did the equivalent of third party voting and the pipsqueak won! Problem is, now they have to govern...

The South Korean situation still actually seems kind of tame compared to Duterte in the Philippines.

This guy almost makes Trump seem normal.

Oh yeah, Duterte is frightening. Not sure what to make of him. He's like an anti-drug Scar Face.

He's likened himself to the Hitler of drug dealers. Essentially allowing vigilante justice.

Already, at least 2,500 people have been killed, and most of them NOT by police.

Makes you wonder how many were actually involved with drugs.

When China makes him and the Philippines their bitch, I wonder if he'll regret it. The US has been the only thing preventing that from happening for the last 50 years. But yeah, spit in our face and kiss China's ass...see how well that works out, you big dumb idiot.

Reading through the article in the original post, it sounds like the only thing the president actually did "wrong" was that some felt she was a bit disconnected. This might well be from an advisor, but if making a president appear disconnected is the only thing this bad advisor could do wrong over a few years, it seems like South Korea's checks and balances worked just fine.

Making the president appear disconnected is hardly the worst thing that is happening here. To me it seems pretty clear why Koreans are upset about this. It's pretty hard to take South Korea seriously knowing they elected someone who is most likely a member of a religious cult, or at the very least has a close friend who is part of it, a friend she has allowed to influence her and her government, and with whom she shared sensitive information for who knows how long. Seems like the kind of relationship that should have been heavily discussed prior to an election, and the kind of thing that should have sent Korean voters running in the other direction. If I were Korean, I would be mortified. And Koreans do not handle shame well. So yeah, it's a huge mess for them.

Edit: Here's the latest news on this: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/01/world/asia/south-kor...

Wasn't saying it isn't a bad situation, but I'd argue the whole Trump thing is way worse...

Then again, with Trump it seems safe to assume that he wouldn't be listening to any advisers at all.

The two co-leaders of Turkey's pro-Kurdish HDP opposition party have been detained along with other MPs, officials say.
Selahattin Demirtas and Figen Yuksekdag were detained as part of a counter-terrorism inquiry, security sources quoted by Anadolu news agency said.
Mr Demirtas was detained at his home in the south-eastern city of Diyarbakir while Ms Yuksekdag was taken into custody in Ankara.
Nine other HDP MPs were also held.

It may very well be if he wins. I'm suffering my share of anxiety over the possibility. 5 more days...
