    Interview: Apr 14th, 2012

    Question

Have you chosen a flashback character for book two of Stormlight Archive yet?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes. I have chosen to use Shallan as the flashback character for Stormlight Two. I feel that her narrative is the best one right here, and so I pretty much filled out the first five, 'cause Stormlight's in two five-book narratives, where we're going to anchor it with Kaladin is the first one and Dalinar is the last one, and then we'll use Shallan, Szeth is number three, and then probably Navani is number four. That's the one I haven't nailed down yet. It's either Navani or a character I can't tell you yet.

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    Nemuri

Will the point of view characters be the same as Way of Kings?

    Brandon Sanderson

Main viewpoint characters will be the same, with a touch more Navani. We will have a glimpse from a few side characters as well, including a sequence of Parshendi viewpoints.

    Interview: Jan 17th, 2015

    Question

In Words of Radiance you have a great line which said “careful planning is the water which nourishes creativity”. I was wondering if, when you wrote that line, were you specifically thinking about novel outlines?

    Brandon Sanderson

So there’s a line in Words of Radiance that’s says “careful planning is the water which nourishes creativity”. Was I specifically thinking of outlines? So when I speak most lines like this, I’m trying to speak through someone’s eyes. That’s Navani I believe who says that am I right? The idea being that that’s the way they’d perceive it. There are other people who would disagree. Now I am a planner, so I understand that mindset a lot. I use a lot of outlines. There are other people who don’t plan at all and their books still turn out awesome. So I think there are a lot of different ways to be creative. But I don’t think that Navani thinks that there are a lot of different ways. If that makes any sense. She has a different perspective on it perhaps.

    Interview: Apr 24th, 2016

    Deana

Elkonar’s queen, is she being influenced by Odium? Because for her to be that stupid and for Navani to go off away and say “Eh, the queen got it” seems weird.

    Brandon Sanderson

You are, um, thinking along proper lines.

    Interview: Oct 9th, 2015

    Question

Navani’s emotion fabrial, are those correspondent to the Thaylen Passions in any way?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, but the Thaylen Passions would’ve come second to some of this.

    Question

    So through a cultural filter--...?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes. There is no magic to the Thaylen Passions, they are a religion but with no magical component. Sometimes a religion is just a religion.

    Footnote

Note: What? I feel a little lost in this question, can someone elaborate? Note Answer: Navani has an emotion fabrial that is laid out like the double-eye. The Thaylen people swear by and maybe worship the Ten Passions. For instance, Rysn exclaims at one point “Oh Craving Passion of Need!”
