    Interview: Nov 21st, 1998

    Question

Does the Snakes and Foxes game played in the Two Rivers have anything to do with the 'finn?

    Robert Jordan

    RAFO.

    Interview: Jul 19th, 2005

    Week 1 Question

Are the Eelfinn limited in their power to grant wishes? To what degree can they affect the outside world? Also, is there any relation between what the Aelfinn do and Min's ability?

    Robert Jordan

Oh, yes, there definitely are limits to the powers of the Eelfinn. For one thing, they cannot affect the outside world at all. If you said that you wanted to be King of the World, you might well find that what you received was not what you expected. For example, they might put you out of their world into a world with no other sentient life, where you would be king by default. Then again, you might find yourself with the necessary skills to make yourself King of the World, if you were able. Actually achieving it would be up to you. But then, many of their "gifts" are skewed in this way. You must be very careful as you're asking if you want to receive what you are hoping for. And yet, remember that Mat actually did receive very much what he asked for. Just not in the way that he wanted.

No, there is no connection between what the Aelfinn do and what Min does.

    Week 19 Question

What were Moiraine's three questions that she asked the Aelfinn and what were their answers? If the whole answer is RAFO could you give us one Q&A?

    Robert Jordan

Sorry, guys. This one is a big time RAFO.

    Interview: 2011

    Twitter 2011 (WoT) (Verbatim)

    Brandon Sanderson (14 March 2011)

Man, this Shadow Rising ebook cover really is full of awesome, isn't it?

    MICHAEL GIGLIOTTI

Mat looks so dark; it's a very stark contrast to his personality.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

That was one of my first thoughts too, but he does get grim once in a while. Particularly after being killed...

    BRANDON SANDERSON (20 MARCH)

Another one for the "Huh, never noticed that before" file. Some Aiel tell Mat is death for him to enter Rhuidean. And they're right.

    TEREZ

    Are they?

    BRANDON SANDERSON

By Mat's perspective. Though he's not 100% sure.

    MANAR

Wait. No. Mat does not die in Rhuidean, does he? I thought his death came when Rahvin strikes him with lightning.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

Mat thinks it counts. Of course, that whole Rahvin thing isn't something he remembers...

    Interview: Apr 5th, 1996

    Robert Jordan

Mat's amulet blocks both saidin and saidar. Jordan answered this one straight-out when asked. He pointed out that the amulet only blocks actual weavings of the One Power, not the physical effects that could be caused by a weaving. For example, Elayne was able to use the One Power to hurl a rock at Mat. Rahvin was able to create a bolt of lightning which struck Mat. (Jordan noted that Mat's death by lightning and subsequent undoing of his death when Rand balefired Rahvin, fulfills a prophecy about living, dying, and then living again.)

    Interview: Apr 5th, 1996

    Question

When did Mat die and live again?

    Robert Jordan

He said something that implied that the die and live again prophecy-fulfillment was the lightning incident in The Fires of Heaven, and not the hanging incident in The Shadow Rising. I was always sure it was the other way around. To paraphrase the Humblest Man on the Net: Who's this guy to tell me such things? He just wrote the books.

    Erica Sadun

What was going on in Aelfland when Mat went round and round and round the same location? Were they traveling in time?

    Robert Jordan

Not traveling in time. The physical laws of nature differ. Mentioning the Dark One [in Randland] is bad luck. In Aelfland, it is *REALLY* bad. You cannot go to Aelfland in Tel'aran'rhiod (similar to stedding).

    Interview: Jan 7th, 2003

    David Funke

When RJ signed my copies of Winter's Heart and Crossroads of Twilight, I asked him a question. Because of wording he uses when describing the Finn and their meeting with Mat, I thought that maybe Min’s viewings had some relation to them. RJ describes the Finn as looking, not at Mat, but at the air around Mat’s head. I thought this was similar to the way Min sees her viewings. Are they related, I asked him?

    Robert Jordan

    No, he said flatly.

    David Funke

Shucks, I said to his assistant. I was so sure!

    Tim Kington

My friend Josh and I had been talking about how Rand and Mat spent a week in Rhuidean, and so he asked how long Mat was hanging.

    Robert Jordan

    Long enough.

    JOSH

    Long enough for what?

    ROBERT JORDAN

Long enough to be ALMOST dead.

    TIM KINGTON

(Emphasis mine) I was pretty sure this was where Mat died and lived again, but I guess that's out of the question now.

    Ted Herman

Do the Finns inhabit a perpendicular world?

    Robert Jordan

No, it is a parallel world.

    Ted Herman

Does the physical location of the world of Finns have anything to do with the bells ringing when the ta'veren were in together?

    Robert Jordan

    No.

    Ted Herman

    Robert Jordan

    Robert Jordan

Why the Finns didn't consider the dagger to be a weapon?

Also, Moiraine did enter the Rhuidean doorframe ter'angreal. That's the one that caught fire and melted after she and Lanfear passed through together. Berelain certainly knows of the Tear doorframe, but she has never entered it.

    Interview: Dec 17th, 2008

    Question

I know you probably can't go too deeply into it, but are there any questions about the story you had as a fan that you will make sure get answered in this final novel?

    Brandon Sanderson

I am still deeply interested in ascertaining the solution to the quandry regarding the character of Asmodean, most specifically the mystery surrounding the circumstances of his demise. ;)

I also mentioned Moiraine's fate last year as being a big question I had. She's always been a favorite of mine, and each time I read through the series, I'm left wondering about her. (Well, not any more, since I've read the notes. But you know what I mean.)

I've been surprised to discover that a lot of readers take her survival for granted, but I've never done so. The letter gives some good clues that she might still be around, but it could also be some kind of trap by the Aelfinn and Eelfinn. The answers and gifts they give are truthful, yet there's often a twisted logic to them as well, it seems.

I can't say more here, I'm afraid, since I now know too much.

    Interview: Oct 27th, 2009

    Matt Hatch

I don’t think Jordan ever, maybe somebody asked, in his notes does he ever say what the treaties were between the 'Finns and the people with whom they made them? Are those treaties actually written down somewhere?

    Brandon Sanderson

Um—I think that you may see some of this in the encyclopedia. How is that for a Robert Jordan answer for you? The encyclopedia is coming. [Stuff about the Big White Book]. It is actually going to be an encyclopedia...Harriet, Maria and Alan are working on that. A Memory of Light comes first so they have to keep dividing their time. My guess would be 2012, but if we’re really on the ball, I would think releasing it the same year of the last volume would be a smart thing to do...Peter will you take a note to let Maria know that I told them that that might happen so she is not blind sided by it. She and Harriet will have to decide if that goes in if anything regarding that goes in. The original treaty between the Aelfinn and Eelfinn and mankind. Just remind me to talk to Harriet to talk to Maria about it.

    MATT HATCH

    Are the treaties different?

    BRANDON SANDERSON

    Different from what?

    MATT HATCH

There are two treaties...(hard to hear what I ask next, but I’m clarifying Snakes and Foxes).

    BRANDON SANDERSON

They are similar, how about that. They are similar enough that they could be considered functionally identical but there are little differences.

    Interview: Sep 4th, 2010

    Question

The Aelfinn and the Eelfinn. Are there more? Did I miss huge tracts of information about them throughout the books, because I feel very unknowledgeable by going into this book?

    Brandon Sanderson

You have not missed anything if you have read the sequences where people go through the Redstone doorways. You have the same information that everyone else has, except for a few Theorylanders who've asked very obscure questions of Robert Jordan.

    Terez

    Brandon Sanderson

But yeah, you know what you need to know from that and from the discussions in the book. And the things you need to know will mostly be re-covered in this book.

    Interview: Jun 10th, 2010

    Luckers

This is also from one of Brandon's hash outs with Matt from Theoryland. In it Brandon speaks of the nature of Parallel Worlds.

Brandon: Extrapolations of this question get us to: is there one Dragon for all different Parallels or are they all different Dragons? Traveling through the Portal Stone seems to indicate that there are many different lives Rand could have led. The same thing happens with several of the ter'angreal that people go through. The question then is, are those all separate universes? Do we have a multi-verse sort of concept? Or are they possibilities and do these worlds all exist or could exist, what is the difference. In some of those Rand failed. So, is Rand the Dragon in all of them or is Rand not the Dragon in some of them? What happens in the ones where Rand failed? Are they real worlds? Are those different worlds where there is a different Dark One who then takes over and destroys that world or maybe not, maybe he makes it has he wishes. Or are those just possibilities, reflections of this world that don't really exist except when we touch them? Those are all very good questions. Robert Jordan said that Tel'aran'rhiod is a reflection of all different worlds, which implies other worlds continue to exist. The World of the Finns is something different...

Matt: ...he called it a Parallel World...

Brandon: Yes, the Parallel World, that one and also the one Rand and Lanfear visited are persistent regardless of someone from this world visiting. Yet, many of those seem almost shadowy and reflections of the real world, some of them seem as real just strange when visiting them. What happens in these different world, that sort of thing, those were never questions that Robert Jordan answered...

Ok, my request for clarification is mainly concerned with that last paragraph—specifically it left me confused about whether Brandon is speaking about Parallel Worlds or Mirror Worlds. Brandon seems to lump both in together, describing some as shadowy, some as solid. Brandon describes the Finn world as THE Parallel World (we also know the Ogier world is a Parallel World), but in the same paragraph Brandon seems to define it as a persistent Mirror World of some form, and grants that same allocation to the world Rand and Lanfear visited in The Great Hunt.

    Maria Simons

Cut Brandon a break, here. I had to look it up to make sure that I had which one was which correct. The 'finn worlds are Parallel Worlds, the Ogier world is a Parallel World. The place that Lanfear, Rand, Loial and Hurin went to was a Mirror World, as were all of the ones in the Portal Stone incident.

    Luckers

[Sorry Brandon! I am an uber geek and get carried away and never meant to attack you! Mea culpa!]

    Interview: Apr 15th, 2011

    Question

[paraphrased] Were there any consequences from Rand asking questions of the Aelfinn that touched on the Shadow (about cleansing the taint and winning Tarmon Gai'don)?

    Alan Romanczuk

Moiraine and Cadsuane thought there would be consequences, but that doesn't necessarily make it so.

    Ted Herman

However, the glossary entry in Towers of Midnight for the Aelfinn states that there are consequences in such circumstances, so either that is wrong or there is a possible contradiction.

    Towers of Midnight
    CHAPTER: GLOSSARY
Aelfinn: A race of beings, largely human in appearance but with snakelike characteristics, who will give true answers to three questions. Whatever the question, their answers are always correct, if frequently given in forms that are not clear, but questions concerning the Shadow can be extremely dangerous. Their true location is unknown, but they can be visited by passing through a ter'angreal, once a possession of Mayene but in recent years held in the Stone of Tear. They can also be reached by entering the Tower of Ghenjei. They speak the Old Tongue, mention treaties and agreements, and ask if those entering carry iron, instruments of music, or devices that can make fire. See also Eelfinn, Snakes and Foxes.

    Julien

He also asked what was the riddle that the Snakes & Foxes told Rand that gave him the answer about how to cleanse saidin. We know their answer to "How can I win the Last Battle?", "How can I survive the Last Battle?" and we know the result of Rand's third answer about cleansing the source but we don't know what the riddle was.

    Brandon Sanderson

Brandon was not sure if he could tell us this without giving something away so he got an email and find out on this question.

    Interview: Jul 11th, 2010

    Stefan

Has Mat's answer from the 'Finns about living and dying already happened?

    Brandon Sanderson

In the books, Mat says that he's "Pretty Sure" that he'd already died. So use that as a guide.

    FOOTNOTE

A better guide might be the two Balticon reports, both of which claim RJ said the Caemlyn death fulfilled the prophecy. RJ also confirmed that Mat was only 'almost' dead in Rhuidean to Tim Kington in 2003, and in 1999 in Sydney he noted that Mat hopes the prophecy was fulfilled in Rhuidean (because he doesn't remember dying in Caemlyn).

    SEMIRHAGE666

Wasn't that fulfilled when he was hung from Avendesora?

    STEFAN

That's what I'm wondering, whether that was it or not.

    EAST COAST GIRL

But I thought Mat DIDN'T die when he got hung, just came really close ...

    MAGICKAL MAN

Mat died and then Rand used balefire and turned back time.

    STEFAN

Right *facepalm* I don't know how I forgot that.

    RLRHORROCKS

If he had actually died when he was hung, Rand wouldn't have been able to bring him back. (i.e.: crazy puppet girl in the Stone)

    BRANDON SANDERSON

Re: Another Mat being hung confirmation. Like I said, Mat's pretty sure that counted for him dying. He really doesn't want to try anything like that again...

    Footnote

Brandon has consistently presented a "confused" front on this issue; he was still doing it in 2011. Most likely he is trying to be clever about it, maybe playing on RJ's 2009 interview, but all it does is stir up the fans who happen to know what RJ said about it (which is a good number of them; it's common knowledge).

    Interview: Dec 2nd, 2010

    Virginia

Okay. Well…I guess we'll just go into the pronunciations.

    SPENCER POWELL

Well, our next little bit needs a little bit of a lead-in for our listeners who don't have access to our huge list of questions like we do. As part of our interview questions, we have a list of words, and we asked, "How do you pronounce each of these words?" And there are about 43 of them. There are probably some on here that don't need to be on here, and I know that there aren't some on here that should be, but these are the 43 that we came up with.

    VIRGINIA

Yeah, Spencer got mad at me because I went and annotated the list, like…I gotta be exact, and he's like "No…"

I didn't get mad at you! I just took 'em off; I'm like, "Oh yeah, you're right; take that one off." Anyway. And so Maria, Alan…would you please go through the list and tell us how to pronounce these names and places?

    Maria Simons

Okay, here we go. And I may, you know, be wrong on some. But others, I'm pretty sure of.

Yeah. That's like, "Waait a second, that's not…but oh, I guess it is."

    MARK

How do you pronounce the Traveling people again?

    MARIA SIMONS

    too-AH-thah-AHN.

    VIRGINIA

There's something else with the double A there…

    MARIA SIMONS

    ah-tha-AHN mee-AIR. (Atha'an Miere)

    VIRGINIA

Okay, great. Any others you can think of that are commonly mangled, that would have driven Jim crazy?

    MARIA SIMONS

    I think I've mentioned tah-EEM before, and egg-ee-AH-nin…

    VIRGINIA

    dee-MAN-dred? dee-MAHN-dred? DEE-man-dred?

    MARIA SIMONS

    Ehh...dee-MAHN-dred, I think…but I wouldn't swear dee-MAHN-dred. [glossary: DEE-man-drehd]

    ALAN ROMANCZUK

    Pretty straightforward.

    VIRGINIA

How about all of the Forsaken? A lot of them often get mangled, or a few. GRIN-doll?

    MARIA SIMONS

Grindle, is how I say it. [glossary: GREHN-dahl] And it's interesting, just looking at a thing, and I pronounce CADD-in-soar (cadin'sor) wrong. [glossary: KAH-dihn-sohr]

    JENNIFER LIANG

    Oh really?

    MARIA SIMONS

Yeah, because it's supposed to be cah-DIN-soar. [It's not, according to the glossary.]

    JENNIFER LIANG

Okay, because I say it the way you say it.

    VIRGINIA

Yeah, I think… [inaudible] so that makes sense.

    ALAN ROMANCZUK

Oh! ish-AH-may-el, and SAM-may-el. [glossary: ih-SHAH-may-EHL, SAHM-may-EHL] [When RJ said it, the 'may' part was more like the German 'Mai'.]

    JENNIFER LIANG

Yes. Those are really common mistakes; I hear that a lot.

    VIRGINIA

Ben [?] was right; we had that famous tagline from the original podcast, and we had this thing…I think, "Sammael was pretty buff!" [laughter] We used that a lot, and it sort of went away when he did, I guess.

    SPENCER POWELL

Another one that I have lots of problems with—and I can't believe I didn't get it on the list—but is the GOLL-um (gholam), or the…I can't even pronounce it right now.

    MARK

    GO-lem?

    SPENCER POWELL

Yeah, the GO-lem, that's chasing Mat.

    ALAN ROMANCZUK

    Yeah.

    MARIA SIMONS

    Gollum.

    SPENCER POWELL

    Gollum?

    VIRGINIA

    Oh, it's Gollum! [crosstalk]

    MARIA SIMONS

I am not absolutely sure, but that's how I say it, so…

    VIRGINIA

What about some of the other Seanchan beasts that made me think of, the grolm, then there were two of the others that…

    MARIA SIMONS

    ROCK-in (raken), and TOE-rock-in. (to'raken)

    VIRGINIA

Yeah, and then there was another one, the um…

    MARIA SIMONS

Torm…the book is right in front of me…

    VIRGINIA

Oh, maybe it was the name of that…oh, Suroth's pet!

    MARK

    S'redit?

    MARIA SIMONS

Oh yes, that thing. I can't remember… [crosstalk]

    VIRGINIA

    Mandra…Mandragal?…Almandragal.

    ALAN ROMANCZUK

    The LOW-par (lopar)?

    VIRGINIA

Yeah, the lopar. Almandaragal was his name, or something like that?

    MARIA SIMONS

Something like that. I would have to look it up.

    ALAN ROMANCZUK

    It was a LOW-par (lopar), wasn't it?

    VIRGINIA

Yeah, lopar. I think there was another one that I couldn't…maybe I'm just hallucinating. [laughs]

    MARIA SIMONS

    Let's see…

    VIRGINIA

I'm sure there's a zillion others I'll think of after you're off the air here with us…

    ALAN ROMANCZUK

Oh, s'RED-dit (s'redit) is another one. Remember the elephant-like creature?

    MARIA SIMONS

Corlm, C-O-R-L-M (I like that word). Torm…that's all I can find.

    VIRGINIA

What about Tuon's new name as Empress?

    MARIA SIMONS

    for-too-OH-nah?

    VIRGINIA

Fortuona, okay. I'm not sure how else you could pronounce that, but I've been wrong before, so...

    MARIA SIMONS

That, I'm assuming is right; I'm pretty sure I heard Jim pronounce it that way, because that was his choice of name.

    VIRGINIA

There must be something else; there seems like a million things, and that I didn't add enough to the list.

    MARIA SIMONS

    OH-geer…

    ALAN ROMANCZUK

    moe-TIE? (???)

    VIRGINIA

Oh! What about—speaking of historical figures—LAH-tra…poe-SAI? Or poe-SAY? deh-KYU-meh? (Latra Posae Decume)

    ALAN ROMANCZUK

Oh yeah, LA-tra (LA rhymes with laugh)…

    VIRGINIA

I got the Latra, but I'm not sure about the second and third names.

    MARIA SIMONS

    Boy.

    VIRGINIA

    It's P-O-S-A-E, and then D-E-C-U-M-E.

    MARIA SIMONS

    po-SAY-uh deh-COO-may.

    VIRGINIA

    deh-COO-may, okay. [crosstalk]

    MARIA SIMONS

That's totally off the top of my head. I see it (?) and think it, anyway. po-SAY-uh deh-COO-may, yeah.

    Interview: Apr, 2012

    Eleanor

Will all the questions Rand and Moiraine asked of the Aelfinn be revealed in A Memory of Light?

    Brandon Sanderson

No.(Will we know more?) They will be partially revealed.

    ELEANOR

This one I can't remember too well from the notes taken, so the wording may be a little off. He looked certain and a little cheerful on this one.

    PrncRny

I was thinking about Moiraine's questions to the Aelfinn. We already know what one of them was, is there any hint as to the other two?

    Brandon Sanderson

If they aren't revealed in the last book, they will probably be in the encyclopedia. We want to save a few things for that, just so you know.

    Marie Curie

Peter suggested we ask you: Is Rand's third question to the Aelfinn specifically known? Is it in the notes?

    Maria Simons

Yes, it is known and it is in the notes. It will be included in the encyclopedia.

    Twitter 2013 (WoT) (Verbatim)

    Rich E (23 January 2013)

Did Rand's third question to the Aelfinn involve whether/how the Dark One could be killed?

    Brandon Sanderson (23 January 2013)

I think Maria and Harriet are planning to put these in the encyclopedia, but you are right on the third question.

    Peter Wikberg

    What did Moiraine ask Aelfinn/Eelfinn?

    Brandon Sanderson

Ooh, good question. And one I don't have the answer to that handy, but we can MAFO that and ask Maria.

    Maria Simons

Everything I know about Aelfinn/Eelfinn questions/wishes will be in the encyclopedia.

    Interview: 2013

    Twitter 2013 (WoT) (Verbatim)

    Lisa Mercer (23 January 2013)

When was the second time that Mat had died? Was it when he was 'reborn' with a new name from his marriage?

    Brandon Sanderson (23 January 2013)

    Rahvin's attack.

    Footnote

For the record, this is the only time Mat died; there was nothing in what the Aelfinn said about him dying twice, though presumably he'll die again some day.

    Interview: Feb 22nd, 2013

    Question

How come Lan couldn’t tell that Moiraine was alive, and with the Aelfinn and the Eelfinn? Because he felt the severing of the bond?

    Brandon Sanderson

He did not have the bond any more. Since the bond was severed, he couldn't feel her any more.

    Question

But why would the bond be severed, she was still alive?

    Brandon Sanderson

RJ says it is because she went to another dimension, and when that slice happened, it cut the bond. The bond couldn't function across the dimension there without some sort of connection there, without some sort of opening portal or something like that.
