    Interview: Dec 9th, 2002

    Question

How does the idea of souls apply to constructs such as Nym and Trollocs? Could either of them be reborn?

    Robert Jordan

To whoever put this one forward, this is one of the best questions I've ever gotten! Nym and Trollocs both have souls, and either could be reborn, but since Nym were a pure construct (i.e. each of them was individually made, like hand-crafting) a Nym would not be reborn as a Nym. You might say that a Nym's soul was borrowed temporarily from the supply of souls awaiting rebirth. A Trolloc, however, bears a twisted, or corrupted soul, and would be reborn as a Trolloc. Though frankly, a Trolloc's soul is such a pitiful thing, it hardly seems worth calling a soul.

    Interview: Oct 21st, 2005

    Question

Why can't Shadowspawn pass through gateways?

    Robert Jordan

It's because they're artificial constructs. They can't tolerate the passage.

    Question

So would a Nym have the same problem?

    Robert Jordan

    Yes.

    Question

    How about Ogier?

    Robert Jordan

No. Ogier are not artificial constructs.

    Interview: Jul 14th, 2006

    Robert Jordan

By the way, I've seen posts various places suggesting that I've had Trollocs using gateways in previous books. I think this stems from the attack on the Stone of Tear where I speak of Trollocs and Myrddraal "leaping out of thin air." This was not meant to convey gateways—no openings in the air were mentioned—but rather the suddenness of their appearance. A cliche, I know. Later, in The Shadow Rising I think, I explained that they had been smuggled into the Stone using barges and wagons.

    Interview: Apr 21st, 2012

    Ishara

We know that Shadowspawn cannot survive going through a gateway. Would the gholam have died just by going though the gateway in Towers of Midnight, or was it necessary for Mat to have kicked him off into the abyss?

    Maria Simons

No, he wouldn't have died just by going through the gateway, but he's unique.

    Interview: Apr 21st, 2012

    Matt Hatch

So, would it be possible to get a concrete definition of what the difference is between Shadowspawn and a construct?

    Alan Romanczuk and Maria Simons

Well...a construct doesn't have to be Shadowspawn. Someshta (the Green Man, a Nym) was a construct, and he was not Shadowspawn. But, no, we haven't got a list of which belongs to which category.

    Interview: Feb 1st, 2013

    Question

What happens with the Green Man?

    Brandon Sanderson

I have no answer for you. It is not spoken of by RJ, so you will have to extrapolate yourself. I could make something up, but I don't do that anymore. If it was for the books, I could say "this needs to happen" with my creative freedom I was given, but at this point, with it done, that's no longer my job. So my answer is, I don't know! We know that the Nym must come back as the Ages turn, but we don't know when they will be "reinvented".

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2016

    Question

The hemalurgic constructs in Shadows of Self, are they as twisted as they are because something was spiked into them, or because something was spiked out?

    Brandon Sanderson

Something spiked in. RAFO on the spiked out part, but nobody knows how to spike something out of someone without killing them, so most likely just spiked in.
