    Interview: Apr 20th, 2004

    Week 10 Question

What did Lanfear do to Rand at the end of The Great Hunt, when she drew the Dragon's Fang on his forehead?

    Robert Jordan

She drew the Dragon Fang on his forehead. For exactly the reason you would think.

    Interview: Jan 25th, 2005

    Week 12 Question

In Winters Heart, you mention that back in the Age of Legends, there were several other Forsaken that the Dark One had killed because he suspected they would betray him. What's their story? Were those people ever as high ranking as the 13 survivors, or where they more like high-ranking Dreadlords then actual Forsaken?

    Robert Jordan

First off, Dreadlords was the name given to men and women who could channel and sided with the Shadow in the Trolloc Wars. Yes, the women were called Dreadlords, too. They might have liked to call themselves "the Chosen," like the Forsaken, but feared to. The real Forsaken might not have appreciated it when they returned, as prophecies of the Shadow foretold would happen. Some of the Dreadlords had authority and responsibility equivalent to that of the Forsaken in the War of the Shadow, however. They ran the Shadow's side of the Trolloc Wars, though without the inherent ability to command the Myrddraal that the Forsaken possess, meaning they had to negotiate with them. Overall command at the beginning was in another's hands.

Forsaken was the name given to Aes Sedai who went over to the Shadow in the War of the Shadow at the end of the Age of Legends, though of course, they called themselves the Chosen, and despite the tales of the "current" Age, there were many more than a few of them. Since they occupied all sorts of levels, you might say that many were equivalent to some of the lesser Dreadlords, but it would be incorrect to call them so. At the time, they were all Forsaken—or Chosen—from the greatest to the least.

Some of those Forsaken the Dark One killed were every bit as high-ranking as the thirteen who were remembered, and who you might say constituted a large part of the Dark One's General Staff at the time of the sealing. With the Forsaken, where treachery and backstabbing were an acceptable way of getting ahead, the turnover in the upper ranks was fairly high, though Ishamael, Demandred, Lanfear, Graendal, Semirhage, and later Sammael, were always at the top end of the pyramid. They were very skilled at personal survival, politically and physically.

In large part the thirteen were remembered because they were trapped at Shayol Ghul, and so their names became part of that story, though it turned out that details of them, stories of them, survived wide-spread knowledge of the tale of the actual sealing itself. Just that they had been sealed away. Other Forsaken were left behind, so to speak, free but in a world that was rapidly sliding down the tube. The men eventually went mad and died from the same taint that killed off the other male Aes Sedai. They had no access to the Dark One's protective filters. The women died, too, though from age or in battle or from natural disasters created by insane male Aes Sedai or from diseases that could no longer be controlled because civilization itself had been destroyed and access to those who were skilled in Healing was all but gone. And soon after their deaths, their names were forgotten, except for what might possibly be discovered in some ancient manuscript fragment that survived the Breaking. A bleak story of people who deserved no better, and not worth telling in any detail.

    Footnote

The 'another' mentioned at the end of the first paragraph probably refers to Ishamael; there are hints in the BWB that he began the Trolloc Wars during one of the periods where he was free from the Bore.

    Interview: Jul 19th, 2005

    Week 3 Question

After Moiraine fought Lanfear in Cairhien, what happened to the wagons full of ter'angreal and such that came out of the Aiel Waste? Are they just in some storeroom there? And what happened to Moiraine's horse Aldieb?

    Robert Jordan

The ter'angreal and so forth that came from Rhuidean are still in Cairhien for the moment, warded by Rand so they aren't accessible to anyone but him. Aldieb is in the stables at the Sun Palace.

    Interview: Jul 19th, 2005

    week 12

Who was Beidomon, who helped Lanfear with the project that lead to the drilling of the Bore? Did he figure in the later events at the end of the Age of Legends?

    Robert Jordan

Beidomon was a male Aes Sedai, and a research genius, who believed that they were onto something great. The drilling of the Bore itself caused great damage, and Beidomon, Lanfear and others involved were blamed for that. Once it became clear what had actually happened, the opprobrium increased, and Beidomon sought obscurity, finally committing suicide when he was unable to achieve it. Everyone knew his name, and what he had done. He had nowhere to hide.

As an aside, for those who think that Lanfear was in some way twisted against her will by being involved in drilling the Bore—I have heard the theory advanced—of all those involved in the project, she was the only major figure to go over to the Shadow. She was ripe for the Shadow's plucking long before the Bore was drilled.

    Interview: Feb 1st, 1994

    Robert Jordan

Now about how evil the Forsaken are. I'm not really sure you define evil. Part of what I am writing about is just how ordinary evil is. In many ways, without the One Power, the Forsaken would be no more than Darkfriends, though perhaps a bit more than ordinary. True, their callousness toward the pain, suffering, even death of ordinary people, and the way they submerge everything and everyone in their own quest for power—and true immortality—their willingness to deliver the world to the Dark One in that quest, are shared by many who do not have their powers. The point is that they are human; they haven't gotten rid of human emotions, or human weaknesses except for a few physical ones. They are not gods, nor even demi-gods, though they seek to be and think they already are. But believe me, there is nothing they will not do to achieve their goals, no price too high to pay—especially if it is paid by someone else, or millions of someone elses. And Lanfear holding back and doing good for Rand's sake? Ha! She was psychically fixed on possessing a man who never loved her. Even with that, her desire for Rand was as much a desire for power as for him. To be the one to deliver the Dragon Reborn to the service of the Shadow; that would set her above the other Forsaken. And learning that the access ter'angreal for the two huge sa'angreal were still in existence....Sure, she wanted his love—not least because it had been denied her; Lanfear was a woman who claimed a right to anything she wanted—wanted his devotion, but even more than his body, Lanfear wanted power, the power possibly to replace the Dark One, even to replace the Creator. For Rand's sake? Not a chance.

    Compuserve Chat (Verbatim)

    Joe Rosenman

Greetings! From Rand's Rhuidean vision: If the Sharom is the Dark One's prison, why would it be floating in on place above a city and not in some transcendent plain? Why didn't Rand see it there?

    Robert Jordan

But it isn't. The Sharom and the Collam Daan are a university/research center. Or were.

    Joe Rosenman

Also, did Mierin intend to create the Bore?

    Robert Jordan

    In part, yes. Not alone.

    Interview: Oct 11th, 2005

    Robert Jordan

Re: Lanfear and Rand at the docks. She was just toying with him using her angreal, [while he used the little fat man]. They were pretty well matched. BUT, questioned whether Rand's estimation that he could end it if he wanted to, RJ said, yes. But of course, Rand couldn't.

    Interview: 2010

    Brandon Sanderson (19 November 2009)

Okay, time to post about Cyndane for you Theorylanders. I have been discussing with Maria all day. She and I have different opinions on...

    BRANDON SANDERSON

...some things in the notes, but she has convinced me that she is right. I believed that there were some...issues with her power level.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

Dark One playing tricks to keep everyone guessing. But Maria convinced me her Power really is what it seems. So you can disregard my...

    BRANDON SANDERSON

...comment about her being really really weak and stick with the word I used earlier: "weakened."

    BRANDON SANDERSON

This is what you get for asking about things that we are still picking apart the notes regarding.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

;) You know I love you, Theorylanders. (Even if I sometimes feel like I'm surrounded by a pack of wolves when talking to you.)

    Footnote

Brandon had indicated in The Gathering Storm signing reports that Cyndane was 'much weaker' than Lanfear. However, Graendal indicated in The Path of Daggers that Cyndane was, while weaker than Lanfear, still stronger than her, so we knew she wasn't that much weaker. It's still up in the air after Towers of Midnight as to why she wasn't drained as much as Moiraine. The Eelfinn claimed that they killed her by draining her too quickly, but Moiraine thinks that someone came for her. Anyway, we badgered Brandon about it, so he cleared up the confusion.

    Interview: 2010

    Terez (30 July 2010)

Does Min's comment to Corele mean that the Dark One can subvert her viewings BEFORE the Pattern is destroyed?

    Terez

Asked in reference to the viewing that Elza would serve Rand. Or did it simply not imply she would serve forever?

    Brandon Sanderson (30 July 2010)

Elza did serve Rand, in her own way. It did not mean forever. That was not a subverting of the viewing. (Or wasn't meant to be.)

    Terez

Thanks! That's what I thought but some will still say you didn't answer the original question lol. It's Theoryland.

    Brandon Sanderson

Robert Jordan taught me to give Aes Sedai answers.

    Terez

    Fair enough. :)

    Terez

There is one case in which I suspect that RJ gave an Aes Sedai answer and the reporter may not have gotten it exactly.

    Terez

Q: Was Else always Lanfear? RJ: No. Else did exist as a separate human but was played by Lanfear after Else was expelled.

    Terez

Strange, because of the personality 'Else' showed, and the Tear trap being Mesaana's trap, not Lanfear's. Any comment?

    Brandon Sanderson

    MAFO.

    Maria Simons

(later) I cannot find anything to clarify the question.

    Terez

PS, thanks for taking time to do Q&A here. Far superior to tour reports, since the Aes Sedai answers are direct from you. ;)

    Terez

...not to mention the quick responses, and the fact that you have more time to think the answers out. You are awesome!

    Terez

By the way, not knocking the tour reporters. They rock; we have a lot of good stuff because of them.

    Terez

I am just reminded of Tam. 'Tell me what she said. Her exact words, mind, just as she said them.' And Thom too. :)

    Brandon Sanderson

Sure. Of course, I'm not convinced half of Theoryland hasn't joined Twitter only to follow/question me...

    Brandon Sanderson

When I'm on tour, do be aware that I don't have notes handy and I'm usually very tired. All answers are suspect.

    Terez

As for stalking you...someone has to do it to keep the Q&A organized, and I elected myself (also before you came along).

    Brandon Sanderson

Ha. Just seems that I get a surprising number of tweets from people with no profile picture, and who are only following me. :)

    Brandon Sanderson

I don't feel stalked at all. This is how I use Twitter, and I'm happy to answer questions.

    Matt Hatch

No profile pics and only following you? That sounds like my twenty other Twitter accounts...

    Footnote

Min and Cadsuane told Corele that she sees pieces of the Pattern, but if the Dark One destroys the Pattern as he aims to do, then her viewings will be irrelevant. Those that are in reference to things after the Last Battle will only come to pass if they prevent the Dark One from destroying the Pattern. Some took this to mean that Shaidar Haran (essentially, the Dark One) subverted Min's viewing that Elza would serve Rand when he ordered Elza to help Semirhage torture and control Rand.

    Interview: 2011

    Twitter 2011 (WoT) (Verbatim)

    Omar Subedar (4 January 2011)

Who is your favorite member of the Chosen?

    Brandon Sanderson (4 January 2011)

Moridin. Followed by Demandred. Followed by Lanfear.

    OMAR SUBEDAR

As for Moridin, I never liked the fact that he thought that Dark One winning would be THE end. I mean, according to...

    OMAR SUBEDAR

Robert Jordan, there are no beginnings or endings to the turning of the Wheel right? Only relative beginnings and endings.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

Moridin believes that if the Dark One wins, there will BE no Wheel. It will be broken. So in that way, there are still...

    BRANDON SANDERSON

...no beginnings or endings. There is nothing. Some, including Cadsuane, believe this is a very real possibility.

    Interview: 2011

    Twitter 2011 (WoT) (Verbatim)

    Brandon Sanderson (8 April 2011)

This might be old news, but people keep asking me about it. Yes there ARE Dreamers among the Forsaken. Male and female.

    AUSTIN MOORE

One male AND one female Forsaken are Dreamers?

    BRANDON SANDERSON

There are multiple Dreamers. At least one male and at least one female.

    Footnote

This might have been in response to the previous conversation about Moghedien. She and Lanfear are the top candidates for the female Dreamers, and Moridin is the obvious choice for the men, since skill in Tel'aran'rhiod and skill in invading others' dreams seem to be concurrent with the Talent of prophetic dreams. See here for more details.

    Interview: Oct 9th, 1996

    Question

    Was Else always Lanfear?

    Robert Jordan

No. Else did exist as a separate human but was played by Lanfear after Else was expelled.

    FOOTNOTE—TEREZ

Since Lanfear as Else doesn't make much sense to me (Mesaana seeming more likely for a few reasons, not least that the 'trap' was supposedly all her plan, and personality), I asked Erica if maybe RJ didn't actually say exactly that. (Sometimes fan assumptions work their way into the wording, if no alternative is being considered.) Unfortunately, I asked her 17 years after she made the report, so she couldn't remember, but she did say it wasn't her phrasing (indicating that she apparently just wrote down what was said).

    Interview: Oct 24th, 1998

    Drew Gillmore

Chris used his moment with the Creator to open himself up to a huge RAFO, but his question was answered. Chris asked if Moghedien had been raped by Shaidar Haran.

    Robert Jordan

The answer was "Yes, among other things."...

...Another interesting point that may just be my interpretation of things, is that someone asked if Lanfear had been raped as well, right on top of the Moghedien question, and he answered right away with a "No". It could be any number of explanations, but it seemed to me that it was a given that Cyndane was Lanfear from the context of the conversation.

Like I said, just my interpretation.

Someone else who was paying more attention could fill in here.

    Interview: Nov 14th, 1998

    Matthew Hunter

The second was mine: "Do you consider the identities of Moridin and Cyndane to be intuitively obvious?"

    Robert Jordan

He said yes, they should be fairly obvious by now, in many more words. To me, this means Ishamael and Lanfear, respectively.

    Interview: Nov 14th, 1998

    Matthew Hunter

I chimed in later on to ask if "there was a physical resemblance between Cyndane and a certain height-challenged Aes Sedai".

    Robert Jordan

He said "We don't know yet."

    Matthew Hunter

I think that means yes, which is interesting. If there hadn't been one, he could have said no, and he has written the descriptions of Cyndane ambiguously enough to prevent any proof either way.

    Footnote

Matthew is probably referring to the theory that Lanfear had been put into Cabriana Mecandes' body, which was later debunked by Maria. Cabriana wasn't described as short, though, so if he was referring to Moiraine, then of course this was debunked in Towers of Midnight at the latest (not that there was ever much resemblance there aside from height).

    Interview: Mar, 2000

    Paul Ward

Possible question: Why did the ter'angreal doorway burn down when Lanfear and Moiraine passed through?

    Robert Jordan

When Moiraine and Lanfear went through the ter'angreal, it burned in part because both were channeling, and the world on the other side of the doorway has a radically different set of natural laws. The odd optical effects witnessed in that other world are not artificially produced artifacts. (complete answer)

    Paul Ward

The laws for channeling are different on the other side of the doorway...interesting.

    Interview: Sep 3rd, 2005

    Question

In The Dragon Reborn, Lanfear visits Mat as he is recuperating from his One Power surgery over the dagger. At one point she stretches out her hand towards him and he feels a tingle going over him, somebody interrupts them, and she turns her head and sobs, at about the same time a member of Black Ajah stole angreal and ter'angreal out of the Tower cache, one of which was a ter'angreal that was known to have some effect on chance. So it was about this time that Mat's really really really weird luck and the dice rolling in his head began, is this a connection or coincidence?

    Robert Jordan

That is a coincidence. When they say that Mat has the Dark One's own luck, he can get as mad as he wants to, but in a way it is true. It wasn't a gift from Lanfear, though.

    Isabel

[Hehe, another theory busted, and a very interesting answer. I am going for Shadar Logoth now.]

    Question

In that case, what was Lanfear doing?

    Robert Jordan

She was checking his health. She doesn't care very much, except that he is important to Rand, to Lews Therin, him and Perrin both, so she is interested in, the one she wants mainly is Lews Therin, or wanted anyway, and uh, so she is interested in these other two ta'veren, who seemed to be tied in with him, because they might be important to him.

A question about the Forsaken. It is said they have varying levels of strength in the One Power. Do you know where they rank?

    Robert Jordan

    Yes.

    Question

I get the impression that Asmodean is weaker than Lanfear even before he was shielded. How much weaker, etc.?

    Robert Jordan

RAFO. I don't go into that kind of thing. I know where they are. I also know they are highly unreliable. None of them is going to admit that anyone is that much stronger than they are. Even when you are inside their heads. Don't take everything they say as the absolute truth or unbiased observation.

For Phil Reborn, Lanfear climbed onto the wagon to get the angreal. Rand was occupying her to the extent that she couldn't afford to just use flows of Air to bring it to her. And Lanfear being Lanfear, there was a touch of the dramatic in it. She was always a drama queen.

    Interview: Oct 27th, 2005

    Question

Another interesting question was about the scene with all the flies in the house in book two.

    Robert Jordan

This scene where Rand sees the same thing over and over again was actually Fain's doing, a trap devised by him to put Rand in a time loop forever.

    Footnote

The scene is in The Great Hunt, Chapter 10. RJ's assertion that it was Fain who set the trap was also reported by Caychris, who might possibly be the same person. (One report is from Wotmania; the other is from Dragonmount; sometimes people write separate reports for separate forums.) This Q&A was confirmed randomly on Facebook years later by the person who asked the question, Seth Suchy.

In Robert Jordan's notes, he explains that it was Lanfear who set the fly trap, and why:

[Lanfear, of course, laid the trap for him in the village. None could trigger it but one who could channel. Her own test, perhaps, to see if he really is who Ba'alzamon claims him to be, or at least if he might be. If he is the Dragon Reborn, he must be, at least potentially, one of the most powerful channelers in history, and it would take a powerful channeler to escape from that loop. It would also serve the purpose of pushing him to use the Power.] (HUNT CONTINUITY 2, p. 12)

He also noted in the same file that Verin knew the Power had been used in that village:

NOTE: Verin came through the village where Fade was nailed to the door. She knows Power was used there, but not how, since the trap was dispelled by Rand's escape. She would be uneasy about this, perhaps ask if they had encountered an Aes Sedai. (HUNT CONTINUITY 2, p. 1)

We are not sure whether RJ changed his mind, or whether he had forgotten his notes by the time he was asked this question and just made something up on the spot.

    Interview: Dec 19th, 2005

    Robert Jordan

For Sander, you know very well that Isabel would be disappointed if I stopped tugging at her pig-tail.

Now as to the fellow who went mad in the cell next to Padan Fain and the other who committed suicide, neither is evidence for Lanfear's presence. Which is just as well. Repeat after me, slowly. Lanfear—did—not—free—Padan—Fain—in—Shienar. Nor anywhere else, for that matter. There were two prisoners in the cells with Fain, both of them Bordermen who had some knowledge of Shadowspawn. And in the heart of the fortress here comes a troop of Trollocs and the Light alone knows what else. Put yourself in their place. Put yourself in a cage. You can't get out. You are in the dark. And here comes your worst nightmares walking in. Only it's worse than nightmares, because you know that these nightmares are real. You know what they do to human beings. You know they sometimes keep people alive a long time so they can have fresh meat. People don't need arms or legs to survive, so they can feed off you for days, maybe weeks. And you can't get out. You can't get away. You just have to shiver in your cage and watch them open up another of the cages. While you wonder whether they're going to open your cage, too. How do you escape? How can you get away? Maybe suicide is an option? At least it's quick. Quicker, anyway. But make up your mind fast, sport. While you're dithering, your mind might decide to make its own escape. That won't stop you from being butchered slowly, but at least you won't know it's happening. Maybe you can see why Lanfear wasn't necessary here?

    AOL Chat 2 (Verbatim)

    Question

Your style of writing is so simple, yet so complex that it is a genre all its own. Will Moiraine come back from the dead since Lanfear and Asmodean apparently have?

    Robert Jordan

Read and find out—in fact, I really suggest you read and find out.

    Interview: Nov 4th, 2005

    Karana Majin

At one point, Lanfear reflects that she was about as powerful as it was possible to be. Is there an upper limit to human channeling ability, some sort of asymptote that channelers approach but never pass beyond?

    Robert Jordan

Yes, there is an upper limit. In terms of the channeling of raw amounts of the One Power, men can handle more than women. However, women are much more dextrous in their ability to use the One Power, so for all intents and purposes, they are equal in their abilities to do and create weaves and are mostly equal to each other.

    Interview: Nov 21st, 2009

    Matt Hatch

Ok, so, what is then the nature of the Dark One’s relationship with the True Power? In other words, is the Power...is he the Power or it is separate like the One Power?

    Brandon Sanderson

When people bored into his prison they were searching for a new source of power, they found him. Alright? Now, that leaves a strong implication that the True Power is the essence of the Dark One. The True Power when it is used rips apart the Pattern to rebuild it as it desires. The True Power is very destructive to the Pattern. It leaves scars on the Pattern. Robert Jordan said in an interview or maybe it was actually in the books, when you make a gateway with the True Power you are actually ripping a whole in the Pattern and going somewhere else. When you are using the True Power that is what you are doing, it is contrary to the Pattern. That is not a direct answer to your question but I think there are enough implications in there that certain things can be discussed.

    MATT HATCH

[I realize now, after listening to Brandon’s answer that I was making an assumption about the One Power too, that it is separate from the Creator because of what we have been given in the books and the BWB, but I should have asked if instead the One Power is the essence of the Creator...]

    Interview: Nov 21st, 2009

    Matt Hatch

Is the True Power used by any other creatures or beings within Parallel or Perpendicular worlds or other dimensions?

    Brandon Sanderson

Ok, see answering that actually gets us begging the question because let’s step back, the question that people should be asking is does the Dark One exist in all of these Parallels...

    Matt Hatch

...ok, so yeah this is the question I’ll ask, you make a good point. Are there worlds and dimensions that exist outside of the Pattern?

    Brandon Sanderson

Ok, see that’s the question you should be asking. I mean, you should be asking it, but it doesn’t mean I’m going to answer it. [laughter] But that’s at the core of the question. I’m going to discuss it without giving you the answer. I like to do this because I think it frames the question without giving you too much information that I have that I don’t think is appropriate to share right now. Extrapolations of this question get us to: is there one Dragon for all different Parallels or are they all different Dragons? Traveling through the Portal Stone seems to indicate that there are many different lives Rand could have led. The same thing happens with several of the ter’angreal that people go through. The question then is, are those all separate Universes? Do we have a multi-verse sort of concept? Or are they possibilities and do these worlds all exist or could exist, what is the difference. In some of those Rand failed. So, is Rand the Dragon in all of them or is Rand not the Dragon in some of them? What happens in the ones where Rand failed? Are they real worlds? Are those different worlds where there is a different Dark One who then takes over and destroys that world or maybe not, maybe he makes it has he wishes. Or are those just possibilities, reflections of this world that don’t really exist except when we touch them? Those are all very good questions. Robert Jordan said that Tel'aran'rhiod is a reflection of all different worlds, which implies other worlds continue to exist. The World of the Finns is something different...

    Matt Hatch

...he called it a Parallel World...

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, the Parallel World, that one and also the one Rand and Lanfear visited are persistent regardless of someone from this world visiting. Yet, many of those seem almost shadowy and reflections of the real world, some of them seem as real just strange when visiting them. What happens in these different world, that sort of thing, those were never questions that Robert Jordan answered...

    Matt Hatch

    ...the answers exist?

    Brandon Sanderson

The answers exist, but are there many parallel Patterns or is there one Pattern?

    Matt Hatch

Yeah, that’s...are there many Wheels or just one Wheel?

    Brandon Sanderson

That’s not a question, I’m afraid, that I can answer because I don’t think it’s within the scope of the books and I don’t think that the characters...that there are people that could know. You will find Browns arguing all of these different things among themselves, and it’s not my place to step in and end the discussion.

    Footnote

Luckers got Maria to clarify on the Mirror World / Parallel World distinction here.

    Interview: Nov 21st, 2009

    Matt Hatch

You saw where we were going…

    Brandon Sanderson

...yes, I see where you are going...

    Matt Hatch

...I had to do the build up to it because it all comes down to that one question for a couple of things.

    Brandon Sanderson

This one question you are going to ask next?

    Matt Hatch

I’m not going to ask it...

    Brandon Sanderson

    ...oh, the one you asked…

    Matt Hatch

...yeah, I guess I asked a piece of it last night...

    Brandon Sanderson

...when it comes to this certain character that you are talking about, there is a whole thing where Maria and I exchanged a bunch of emails about this. She had managed to pull some things out of the notes that I had not seen, which is interesting, because I was going off of something else. I did not think that Cyndane should be nearly as powerful as she was put in the books as being, so I had been under the belief that the Dark One was pulling shenanigans...

    Matt Hatch

...like a little, in essence, let’s say what the Forsaken Lanfear did to Asmodean, you thought maybe the Dark One was doing some similar...shielding...

    Brandon Sanderson

...or the other way around…here is a little extra power you can draw upon while I am pleased with you, I can take this away...

    Matt Hatch

...that is a question...let’s jump to that question, there have been some theories that talk about Lanfear...

    Brandon Sanderson

...let’s back up and say I was wrong. I was interpreting the notes a certain way. Maria was able to pull something out that I had not seen that made it clear that I had misinterpreted and that that is not the case, Cyndane is not under any shenanigans. What you see is what you get.

    Matt Hatch

Cyndane and her alter ego have never been under any shenanigans?

    Brandon Sanderson

I’m not going to say never been under any shenanigans, but when you see her creating a gateway she is legitimately powerful enough to do it, which I did not believe that she was. Does that make sense? This is all digging into my read of the notes versus and Maria’s read of the notes and Maria was right. She was able to provide information to me that I had not seen which is nice because it was stuff that was very pertinent for what I am working on right now. It would have come out eventually when I would have sent her the scenes I’m working on, but it came out earlier, which is nice. Once I found out what was going on it all made perfect sense.

    Matt Hatch

So, we will understand then in the next book or so why there is a decrease in power but not a significant decrease?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes.

    Matt Hatch

Ok, so that being said there are some theories out there that in the Age of Legends, at one point, Lanfear might have...

    Brandon Sanderson

...let’s just say I have not said that Lanfear and Cyndane are the same person...

    Matt Hatch

...Oh, absolutely, I’m jumping to this other Forsaken that we are talking about...

    Brandon Sanderson

...this other completely different person...Uh huh...

    Matt Hatch

...so Lanfear, the theory goes, that maybe she was accentuated from a beauty and/or power perspective by going to the Finnland previously...

    Brandon Sanderson

    ...ok...

    Matt Hatch

...would the Finns have the ability to accentuate someone’s beauty and/or quantity or access to the One Power through their own capabilities and talents?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, but it might involve third party ter’angreal, angreal, this sort of thing...

    Matt Hatch

...so, they don’t have power to affect the soul’s capability of increasing its total channeling?

    Brandon Sanderson

Certainly not permanently, as far I understand, that is outside the realm of their ability…

    Matt Hatch

...from a beauty perspective can they affect the outer body of some individual?

    Brandon Sanderson

I would say that, yes they can, but they may have to be using some type of ter’angreal or...

    Matt Hatch

    ...some item of power?

    Brandon Sanderson

Some item of power, something like that...of which they have great stores...[what???]

    Matt Hatch

...Really...heh, so the obvious question, where did the Finns get great stores of ter’angreal, angreal, and is that part of the Pact they made.?

    Brandon Sanderson

RAFO...but if you just think about it, we don’t even have to go to the notes for this if you think about it logically, we know of them providing certain items of power to certain individuals that they were able to match very nicely with certain requests very easily. If you run the statistics on that its either a huge coincidence or they have very many to choose from.

    Question

Where did Cyndane’s new body come from?

    Brandon Sanderson

Where have any of the new bodies come from? He then mentioned that it's not confirmed who Cyndane is, though he didn't refute me when we all said that it's pretty certain.

I asked about her strength in the One Power—Brandon says she's very, very weak. This surprised me since I didn't think she was that weak.

    Footnote

She's not; Theorylanders hounded Brandon, and he cleared it up here. She's weaker than she was, but still stronger than Graendal.

    Ted Herman

Maria didn't even say RAFO. That was put out for discussion, which I am fine with. Some thought she wasn't physically there, or used the shield weave that Rand used in The Path of Daggers.

    Interview: Mar 11th, 2011

    Question

It is clear that Lanfear is aware of the search for the Black Ajah, as she shows up in the guise of Else and points the girls towards a previously unknown cache of items supposedly belonging to the Black sisters that went missing. Were those items placed there by Lanfear? If not, who placed those Black Ajah possessions there for the girls to discover?

Did Lanfear become aware of the girls' search for the Black Ajah through information provided to her by the Black Ajah (excluding Verin)?

Did Verin report every request made of her by the Amyrlin concerning the girls’ search to the Black Ajah?

    Terez (herid)

When you said some Forsaken are Dreamers, you meant they have prophetic dreams, right? Or are they just Dreamwalkers?

    Brandon Sanderson

I did mean Dreamers. People have been trying to pin me down on that one.

    Terez

Yeah, everybody has been like convinced that you were just confused...

    Brandon Sanderson

...that I was just confused. No. I meant Dreamers. I DID INDEED MEAN DREAMERS.

    Terez

I know you did, but...just verifying.

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah. And I’m like 95% on that one. We’ll put an asterisk on it. I actually sent Maria deeper into the notes, but I know at least one is, and I’m pretty sure one of each gender is.

    Footnote

The most likely candidates seem to be Moridin, Cyndane, and Moghedien, who are undeniably the most skilled at getting into people's dreams and using Tel'aran'rhiod. These talents seem to go together, and all three of them are still alive as of Towers of Midnight (out of five remaining Forsaken).

    Luckers

What happened to Moiraine’s original angreal? The one she had in the Two Rivers?

    Brandon Sanderson

Oh, you mean the fat man with... no, wait that was Rand....

    LUCKERS

Yeah, Moiraine’s one was an ivory woman.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

Yeah, yeah. You know, that’s a good question, because it’s odd, the notes specifically said she got the angreal as one of her wishes...

    LUCKERS

Ah, so it’s definitely not the angreal Lanfear had? People have asked, I think because both were bracelets.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

No, it’s definitely a different angreal. But yes, if she had another angreal, why would she ask for one?

    LUCKERS

Maybe the Finns took her original one. I mean she was naked when they found her, so they took...

    BRANDON SANDERSON

    Yeah, maybe *looks dubious*.

    LUCKERS

Or maybe it’s still in Cairhien with the rest of her stuff.

    BRANDON SANDERSON

Yeah, but it would still be odd, that she’d ask, if she had another. Yeah, so, I don’t know, sorry.

    Footnote

There are not two bracelets; the description in The Fires of Heaven is the exact same description of that given in Towers of Midnight. In other words, Moiraine's new angreal is the same one she clawed away from Lanfear; her old one disappeared.

I feel like somebody asked who summoned Slayer to the Blight. I could be mixing memories with Freelancer's great post @7, but I have a strange feeling that someone asked, and presented a case that it was Lanfear for similar reasons as provided above, and was told by BS that they make a good case and can defend their reasoning with confidence. I honestly don't know if I'm conflating memories, so please take this with a grain of salt.

    Freelancer

Who summoned Slayer to the Town and met him there?

    Brandon Sanderson

Ok, I'm not sure I should give an answer to this one. Who do you think it is, what are you basing it on?

    Freelancer

I'm pretty sure it's Lanfear. Several things. She's wearing red and black, and she doesn't have a Cour'souvra around her neck. Her appearance is unknown to Slayer, and she's pretty, though she isn't comfortable with her own reflection. She expresses disgust at having to use him. This eliminates Moghedien and Graendal.

    Brandon Sanderson

But she's ordering Slayer to kill Rand.

    Freelancer

This will lead into the next question, but I don't think she believes that Slayer can succeed, she's using him as a distraction, and to give her options, because she's playing a deep game.

    Brandon Sanderson

Ok, here's your answer. Your case is very, very, very solid, and you can stand by it.

    Freelancer

Also about Lanfear. When she pops up next to Perrin several times in Tel'aran'rhiod at the Black Tower, she would speak to him briefly, then glance at the sky and vanish. Was that part of her act, trying to convince Perrin that she was no longer serving the Shadow, or was she genuinely afraid of being caught by "him"?

    Brandon Sanderson

Here's the thing about Lanfear. Just about everything she does has an element, a veneer of truth to it, and that greatly exaggerated, but no more than that. And as you said, she's playing a different game than everyone else, and I mean everyone else. They're all playing chess, and she's playing backgammon. You cannot take her actions at face value.

    Brandon Sanderson

That, and whether Lan actually died or not, are both ones that I'm not going to answer.

    Terez

Yeah, and whether Perrin actually died or not, because he's in the dark prophecy too.

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, but do remember that the dark prophecy people are misinterpreting that one a little bit, by intention.

    Terez

Yeah... [Amusingly, Brandon is talking about the dark prophecy in Towers of Midnight, and I'm talking about the one in The Great Hunt.]

    Brandon Sanderson

Not in the same way that stilling is Healed. All it says in the notes is what I just said. And that Nynaeve would not be able to Heal Setalle. Being reborn would heal burning out, but transmigration would not. That's why even though Lanfear shifted bodies, she was still reduced.
