    Interview: Oct 18th, 2004

    Brandon Sanderson

If you were wondering, most of the explanations we get in this chapter are true. The reason that Raoden was subject to the Dor attacks was because he spent so much time practicing with the Aons. He began to make a bridge between this world and the Dor, and because of that, he gave the Dor a slight opening into his soul. I imagine that he isn't the first one to suffer something like this during the ten years that Elantris has been fallen. Other Elantrians probably practiced with the Aons, and the Dor eventually destroyed them. When it was done, they simply became Hoed.

By finally using the Dor effectively, Raoden relieved a little bit of the pressure, letting the nearby buildup of the Dor (the one that he himself had created by practicing so much) rip through him and fuel that single Aon.

Originally, I had Raoden's conflict with the Dor continue on after this scene—I had it continue attacking him. In a later draft, however, I realized that I'd made a mistake. Raoden has other things to worry about in the upcoming chapters—he doesn't need the Dor attacks to create conflict and tension. So, after this chapter, the Dor attacks actually became distractions. I also realized that the way I'd set up the magic system, this chapter was probably the place where the Dor should stop attacking, since Raoden had fulfilled what he wanted it to do.

    Interview: Feb 20th, 2015

    Question

Assuming that it’s possible-- There are alternate Physical Realms, is Shadesmar common between them?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes… They don’t always call it Shadesmar.

    Question

Sure, but there is one Cognitive?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes. There’s one Physical too if you think about it.

    Question

    Well… Between the books…

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah but there’s one Physical-- There’s one universe, it’s all the Physical Realm, just like there is one Cognitive Realm.

    Interview: Feb 20th, 2015

    Kurkistan

You've said that the the laws of physics in the cosmere are ours except where they're messed with by the spiritual… But are the laws of physics actually in the Physical realm all the time, or are they in the spiritual realm doing their stuff on a spiritual level that's trickling down to the physical as a matter of course?

    Brandon Sanderson

The three are more closely aligned than-- [Breaks off to focus on the books he’s signing, the speaking was distracting him]

    Interview: Feb 20th, 2015

    Kurkistan

So you were saying that physics- laws of physics- that the realms are a lot more closely bound and the laws of physics are not just tied to one of them?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yeah.

    Interview: Oct 12th, 2015

    Kurkistan

How long does it take a newly-made chair to start thinking of itself as a chair?

    Brandon Sanderson

It depends on how- is the perception of the people that are using it.

    Kurkistan

So if it just drifted together in space magically into a chair...

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes. It would not actually start thinking of itself as a chair.

    Argent

Kind of like if a tree falls in a forest, and there's nobody there to hear it...

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes.

    Interview: Oct 21st, 2015

    BlackYeti

With regards to the Dor, whereabouts is it located exactly in regards to the Realms?

    Brandon Sanderson

Oh you're the first person to ask this one. It is in the Cognitive Realm. I think you might be the first one to crack that one. So, that's something that I've been dancing around for a while, waiting 'til people started to figure that one out. That's not where most of them are.

    Interview: Apr 8th, 2016

    Blightsong

How much did Super Mind Taravangian know about the Cosmere as a whole, roughly, rough estimate.

    Brandon Sanderson

He had a little bit of knowledge. Not as much as... not as much conscious knowledge.

    Blightsong

Did he guess about the three realms?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, he knew about the three realms. He didn't have to guess on that, he had read philosophy and things, that knowledge is there on Roshar.

    Interview: Apr 23rd, 2016

    Question

In Bands of Mourning you got more into the Connection and you’ve given us some hints there. During previous seminar a question came up on how that relates to your Physical, Cognitive and Spiritual Realm. I guess, we’ve talked about… if people were to go different places… it seems from the hints you’ve given in your books that there’s a Physical aspect to Connection as far as where people are when they use the Connection as well as there’s some ideal with… in the Secret History that we’ve got, when Kelsier was, when he wasn’t Connected enough with Preservation. So can you give us anything more...

    Brandon Sanderson

I just gave you a ton in Secret History! So much! I gave you a lot in Secret History to philosophize upon, this is very relevant to a lot of things that happen in the Cosmere.

    Question

I guess, specifically, does someone have to have both… with Connection, are there more than one elements that people would have to have to have Connection to… provide avenue to power from a different area.

    Brandon Sanderson

Oh, um… there are multiple things that could help with it, yes. There are certain things that you can Connect through to make one strong Connection would be enough for variety of magics, yeah.

    Interview: Dec 3rd, 2016

    yulerule

In the cosmere, you have matter, mind, and soul. Obviously, the physical world is most well understood (same as ours) and the spiritual is most mysterious. When anybody dies (going off from info in secret history) their soul, which was tied to their body, the connection is broken and the soul/cognitive shadow appears in the cognitive realm then goes on to the spiritual. If healing is applied at any moment while the soul/cognitive shadow is in the cognitive realm, the connection can be reestablished and that is why regrowth can heal recently dead. Type of wound shardblade vs not may determine how fast the shadow is sucked into the Spiritual Realm. Also amount of investiture a soul contains. Souls = investiture or at least all of them contain some?

    Brandon Sanderson

So that's a RAFO. We'll dig into that a little later.

    yulerule

    Am I close?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, you're on the right track.
