    Interview: Sep, 2012

    Sweetness

Just after the Shattering (but before they started created humans or something), did all Shards have roughly the same amount of raw power?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes. Good question.

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    Link389

Before Adonalsium was shattered, was there magic in the Cosmere and what form did it take?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, and when I write Dragonsteel, you shall see the answer to this.

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2012

    Question

What is the technology level of the singular society that existed when Adonalsium Shattered?

    Brandon Sanderson

What was the technology level of the society that existed when Adonalsium Shattered? It was less than our own.

    QUESTION

Are you going to give us anything more specific than that?

    BRANDON SANDERSON

    Less than our own.

    Footnote

As Yolen was the first planet with people, this is likely the society that is referred to.

    Interview: Mar 17th, 2012

    Question

How about a confirmation one? We have a secondhand report from Miyabi actually, that says that Hoid was at the Shattering of Adonalsium. Was he there?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes he was.

    Interview: Sep 4th, 2014

    Question

Dragonsteel, where in the universe is that going to take place?

    Brandon Sanderson

    It's actually first.

    Question

Oh really? So it's like a prequel to everything?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes, to the cosmere.

    Question

So is it going to do the breaking of the Shards?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yep.

    Interview: Mar 21st, 2014

    Question

Did the shattering of Honor happen in the Cognitive Realm, and Ruin in the Physical? The reason I'm wondering is, are spren the expression of the shattering in the Cognitive Realm while Ruin's physical being is an expression of the shattering in the Physical?

    Brandon Sanderson

This is an interesting theory that I don't want to completely shoot down, but it is not heading in absolutely correct directions. The shattering of a Shard is an event that transcends all three realms.

    Interview: Mar 12th, 2015

    potterhead42 (Reddit)

Hi, Brandon, I read Mistborn last year and now you're my favorite author. Thanks for writing books that make me go "hell yeah this is awesome!". Also, your video lectures are great. I have no writing aspirations myself, but it is really cool to know all that inside info on the craft and the publishing industry. So, the questions...

    1. You recently changed up the text of Elantris and Words of Radiance. Do you feel like you need to change something about the Mistborn trilogy? I think it's perfect
    2. Will we ever see you write a series with a non-rigid magic system? Not that there's anything wrong with allomancy etc. (they're pretty cool to be honest), but I would be really interested in seeing you handle something vague.
    3. On Scadrial, humans were created as the result of deal between Ruin and Preservation. But what about the rest of the humans on the other worlds of the Cosmere?
    4. Do you think Kelsier could defeat Miles one on one?
    5. I recently started the Wheel of Time (2 books down), and it is quite fun. What would you say is your favorite book a. among the ones written by Mr. Jordan? b. Among the ones written by you?
    6. What can you tell us about your new book, Rampart? ;)

    Brandon Sanderson (Reddit)

    1) I've expressed that my one regret with Mistborn is the climax of Book One, where I think I bring in drawing upon the mists too early in the series without enough foreshadowing. That said, I'm not planning to revise it, even if we do a 10th anniversary edition like with Elantris. The problems with Elantris created continuity issues; the problem with Mistborn is more of an artistic choice, making it similar to the problem in WoR. The difference here is that I'm still working on Stormlight, so it is considered to be an open book in my head--while Mistborn is done, and it's time to leave it alone.
    2) I understand exactly what you mean, and I've played with some, but they don't work as well in the Cosmere. I think I might be able to slip one in, or, do something non-Cosmere.
    3) It's split. Some predate the shattering; others were created. The humans that existed before were always a model, which is why they're so similar to one another.

    Interview: Feb 20th, 2015

    Question

What can you tell us about what magic was like in the cosmere before Adonalsium was Shattered? Was it very different or…

    Brandon Sanderson

Magic was... It was-- I mean-- It was similar, different in some fundamental ways but the things that were done you’ll be able to see other-- You’ll be able to see the pieces.

    Interview: Oct 12th, 2015

    Question

Are Cognitive elements like spren and seons only present on physical planes or worlds where Shards have been Shattered?

    Brandon Sanderson

No, but it does require … alternately the shard would have to give up pieces of their power for that. But it doesn't have to be "they were Shattered by someone." Seons existed on, sorry, spren existed on Roshar before the Shattering. Not as many.

    altoman188

"During the original shattering when the 16 picked up their shards, did the manner or the surroundings of the individual effect the way the magic system came about on their worlds later?"

    Brandon Sanderson

"Oh, well you will read about that in a book that will come out later, so RAFO"

    Paladin Brewer

Did the original 16 break Adonalsium with the intent to gain the shards and the power, or was that a happy/unhappy side effect?

    Interview: Feb 22nd, 2016

    Question

I’m _____ ____ Adonalsium. Out of the people that were leftover from just before the Breaking, did they think it was a good idea or a bad idea?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Opinions are mixed.

    Question

Is it mixed between vessels and non-vessels?

    Brandon Sanderson

Most of the vessels support the decision that they made. I would say of those remaining, who are not vessels, the majority think it was a bad idea. I would say ____ it’s not 100%

    Question

____ Talking about opinion besides the

    Brandon Sanderson

Not many, it is a number that you could count to reasonably.

    Interview: Feb 22nd, 2016

    Question

Was the shattering of Adonalsium done, for the forces to attack the Anti-Adonalsium?

    Brandon Sanderson

You’re focusing too much on the idea of the anti-adonalsium. What was really asked is “is there a force that opposes Adonalsium” and it left me a lot of wiggle room. In other words, the people who killed it was a force, or any person who opposed Adonalsium you could say is a force. What they were trying to get was a “devil” but that assumes Adonalsium is a more Christian-style God, and I have not confirmed any of that.

    Interview: Apr 23rd, 2016

    Question

So, it got established when Syl transformed for Kaladin, a living Blade can become any weapon…

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, based on the perception of the wielder.

    Question

So, why is it that there are only dead swords?

    Brandon Sanderson

That’s a good question that will be answered in the future.

    Question

    Could they make a lightsaber?

    Brandon Sanderson

They could make...metal weapons of a similar style to that, so no, we’re not talking lightsabers. Creating plasma is not something that we’re looking at.

    Question

    A bow, for example?

    Brandon Sanderson

They could create, probably...Well, let’s RAFO that one, I’ll show you what’s going to be happening.

    Question

You mentioned the ecology on Roshar, and you mentioned that mostly the non-sentient spren predate the [shattering of Adonalsium?]. So my question is about the evolution of life on Roshar, and how essential the highstorms are to life on Roshar, how the plants evolved...so can we assume that life that is dependent on the highstorms predates the Shattering of Adonalsium?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Um…

    Question

    Can we correctly assume? [Laughter]

    Brandon Sanderson

I’ll tell you this. The highstorms predate, and there was a lot of natural evolution on Roshar resulting in a lot of what we have there.

    Interview: Apr 23rd, 2016

    Question

This whole talk of both Roshar and the highstorms, I’m glad that you said they predate the Shattering. There are some people on 17th Shard that believe the entire continent is crem that’s accumulated, one highstorm at a time.

    Brandon Sanderson

Good. Let me actually squish that one a little bit because there are mineral deposits that have been mentioned that you have to mine, and crem...there is actual ferrous iron that you can smelt on Roshar, you have to know how to get to it and things like that, and there are actual gemstone mines and things like that, but they’re much harder to get to and Soulcasting is a stopgap that’s helped with this a lot, but there are actual deposits and things like that.
