    Interview: Nov 23rd, 2011

    Tortellini

There was more, but I can't really remember anything major. Finally, I came up and got to ask my questions. Since I started the thread about outposts and stone bridges, I felt like getting some input there.

    Brandon Sanderson

Brandon told me that single highprinces could not erect outposts because due to the superior mobility of the Parshendi—they would overwhelm any small outpost quickly. Soulcasting stone bridges is also not plausible. Apparently, they would need to first get the wooden bridge out there, then soulcast it and then, since the stone is heavier than the wood, they would have to reinforce it, e.g. with ropes. These could then be cut by the Parshendi, so it would not help at all. Dalinar with his mobile bridges is on a better track in his opinion. He did say however that several highprinces working together could easily establish outposts in the Plains. He said the competitive nature of the Alethi was doing them a huge disservice in the war and that if they would work together, they could have taken the Plains long ago.

    Interview: May 22nd, 2013

    StormAtlas

I finally got to ask a question about the Stormlight Archive that Windrunner17 and Chaos helped me with which was: "Why Can Kaladin Surgebind with any gem type but Jasnah and Shallan need specific types?"

    Brandon Sanderson

A lot of that will be explained as the series comes along. It is really the difference between Soulcasting and the other forms of Surgebinding. It's more a quirk of Soulcasting than it is something that is different about about Kaladin. So you've kind of got it reversed a little bit though; Soulcasting has this additional restriction that the other ones don't.

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    Telcontar

Is one of the symbolhead-spren (or maybe all of them) responsible for Shallan's ability to Soulcast (in the way that Syl is responsible for Kaladin's Lashings)?

    Brandon Sanderson

There is indeed a similar relationship there.

    Interview: Sep, 2012

    ReaderAt2046

Is Soulcasting mass-conservative (Soulcast a 1kg goblet, you get 1 kg of blood.)?

    Brandon Sanderson

    In most circumstances, yes.

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2012

    Question

When are we going to find out about how Elhokar can see like the symbols in the mirror and stuff like that. He can Soulcast then, right?

    Brandon Sanderson

You’ll have to see, you’ll have to see...

    Interview: Jun 10th, 2014

    EMTrevor (Tor.com)

Would an Awakener be able to awaken a corpse that was soulcast into stone more easily because it used to be living, thereby being able to create lifeless similar to Kalad's Phantoms without having bones in the framework?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes. That would definitely work.

    Interview: Aug 9th, 2014

    Khyrindor

In Dalinar's vision, why did Nohadon make a distinction between Soulcasting and Surgebinding?

    Brandon Sanderson (Paraphrased)

Because they are distinct in his [Nohadon's] mind.

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes, it did. (Good question.)

    Interview: Mar 22nd, 2014

    TheChronicFeruchemist

If I were to Soulcast pewter, the way Shallan does with the blood in The Way of Kings, would an Allomancer be able to use it?

    Brandon Sanderson

You could create Allomantically viable metals, yes.

    TheChronicFeruchemist

    But is it automatic?

    Brandon Sanderson

I would say that the pure metals are, but the alloys are not.

    Interview: Nov 1st, 2012

    Ninch (17th Shard)

Could a person Soulcast more atium and lerasium if they had a bead?

    Brandon Sanderson

No. Investiture messes things like that up.

    Interview: Mar 13th, 2014

    Macen

Soulcasters, [can't make this out] do they visit Shadesmar, do we see more about them? Because they're [can't make this out] something about them with the stony face.

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, the actual soulcasters. Use of the soulcasters is affecting them on one of the Realms other than Physical.

    Interview: Jan 21st, 2015

    Leinton

Is Soulcasting blood a valid cure for blood diseases?

    Brandon Sanderson

Not really, it's super hard to soulcast people/bodies, you’d have to get it so exact - their blood, healthy blood. It's very hard - basically you’d probably kill them in the process.

    Interview: Jan 24th, 2015

    Question

When Jasnah Soulcasts stuff from a distance, is that something she can only do because she’s a Radiant? And if so, how does that work?

    Brandon Sanderson

    RAFO. Here’s a RAFO card.

    Interview: Oct 17th, 2015

    Havoc

In WoK, Shallan is being chased by Cryptics. She begins to summon her Shardblade, stops and then Soulcasts for the first time. We know from WoR that it's her bond to Pattern, her Shardblade that allows her to Soulcast. So my question is, if Shallan had not begun to summon her Blade, would she have been able to Soulcast?

    Brandon Sanderson

She would not have been able to. No one has ever asked me that before.

    Interview: Apr 8th, 2016

    Blightsong

Would it be harder to soulcast a Knight Radiant?

    Brandon Sanderson

    Yes.

    Blightsong

Would it be harder for her to soulcast a mistborn?

    Brandon Sanderson

Yes, investiture disrupts investiture. It's harder for her to even soulcast a regular person than, say, a rock.

    Blightsong

    Is a Mistborn invested?

    Brandon Sanderson

The Mistborn, how their burning the metal, you're right. They are not specifically invested when they are not burning. When the investiture becomes active, the yes. Before, no, you're right on that.

    Interview: Apr 23rd, 2016

    Question

This whole talk of both Roshar and the highstorms, I’m glad that you said they predate the Shattering. There are some people on 17th Shard that believe the entire continent is crem that’s accumulated, one highstorm at a time.

    Brandon Sanderson

Good. Let me actually squish that one a little bit because there are mineral deposits that have been mentioned that you have to mine, and crem...there is actual ferrous iron that you can smelt on Roshar, you have to know how to get to it and things like that, and there are actual gemstone mines and things like that, but they’re much harder to get to and Soulcasting is a stopgap that’s helped with this a lot, but there are actual deposits and things like that.

    Interview: Dec 6th, 2016

    Question

So Allomantic Savants. When that happens, is that purely physiological, or is there something else happening in terms of…

    Brandon Sanderson

Uhhhh, it’s physiological in a Cosmere sense, but that can involve your Cognitive and Spiritual aspects.

    Question

Yeah, the question there is, are there other similar processes to savantism with other--

    Brandon Sanderson

Yeah, yeah you’ve seen it. So, Soulcasters. Where their spirit is being slowly being merged and infused with Investiture that is having physical ramifications. It’s the same thing.
