rocess of Elimination Would Suggest Lanfear

by Lord Elamier: 1999-03-15 | 6.54 out of 10 (13 votes)

Before Winter's Heart - Archive Only: Who is Cyndane?

Well, now, we now know who resides in Moridin's second mind trap. Moridin, also know as Nae'blis, has both Moghedhien and Cyndane dressed in his red and black livery. More than good money is that Cyndane, whose name means "Last Chance," is the second resident in a mind trap, and a resurrected Forsaken besides.

But who is Cyndane? She is probably not Aran'gar, for they do not look at all alike, buxomness aside, and for the fact that Graendal realizes that she wields saidar, not saidin. In fact, Cyndane wields the One Power more strongly than either Moghedien or Graendal. Given Cyndane's power, and the fact that Lanfear was the only female Forsaken who has been "killed off," is seems that the Dark One may have brought the Daughter of Night back to life.

Before this, however, I had not thought Lanfear was dead, but merely touring in Finnland. But who else could Cyndane be? And what would the fact of Lanfear's death mean for Moiraine, who disappeared into the ter'angreal as well? Thom has yet to take her jewel from the flame, and take her bacon from the fire...

The second mind trap aside, I would have to agree that Lanfear does appear to be a likely candidate. But then again it seems to convenient. Can we truly imagine Lanfear letting someone else run the show? Obviously if she was in the mind trap she would have no choice but look what it took to get Moghedien there and as far as I remember Lanfear has done nothing to deserve that punishment. So I will go along with your first instinct and say that, no it is not Lanfear, unless someone has more evidence. BTW, you brought up an excellent point about Moiraines fate if it was in fact Lanfear, will RJ ever give us a peek at what occurred after falling through the ter'angreal?

I wish to comment on some one who posted his theory concerning lanfear on march 15. He seems to think that cyndane is lanfear, but he also says that she must have been resurrected. That is not necessarily true, the Do might have taken her from finnland and given her a new name and body, or look. He might have put the in the mindtrap because she was working for herself more than for the DO, he does not take kindly to that.

I hope i have been of help.

You bring up a good point. How much control does the DO have over one of his minions soul? Must that person's body die before he can take the soul and place it in another like Osan'gar and Aran'gar or does he have the control to remove Lanfear's soul even before she dies? I would lean initially towards the first, that the body must die, does anyone have any proof either way?
