different idea about the taint and voices

by Niahanchi: 2003-06-24 | 6 out of 10 (4 votes)

Previous Categories: Who is the other person in Rand's head?

Perhaps the voices that male channelers hear are the men who have went insane channeling in the past. So far we know the Dark One is not omnipotent (he has relied on several different agents for his info, i.e. the Forsaken, SH, and others).

The Dark One has also been referred to as reigning over the dead (numerous references). Maybe an unexpected side effect (unexpected even by the DO)of the taint is that it connects male channelers who are alive with channelers who are dead.

In some special cases (like Rand's) they are connected with other “important” souls, or even themselves reborn. Otherwise it is just random chance how they are connected. And because of the various levels of sanity, at times they are able to communicate useful thoughts and other times they are not.

Going even further, maybe the Dark One couldn't modify this side effect either without removing the taint. Now that the taint is gone, no new connections will be made. However, it didn't sever the connections made up to this point.

The voices Rand hears, at least, come from a life his soul has lived. I hadn't thought about this, does the third voice that Rand hears have any type of "madness" to it? It doesn't seem like it, even though we only have one or two spots where that voices speaks. So maybe the madness exhibited by LTT comes from the memories of going mad embedded on the soul. I like how you suggest that this was an unintended consequence of the backlash...could be.

Niahanchi, does your theory say that when the DO's counterstroke hit and the remaining Hundrend Companions went instantly insane, they instantly started hearing the voices of dead male channelers, in some cases their previous lives of the turning of the wheel?

if it does, i like that. so LTT is still hearing this other voice, probably the previous dragon, and Rand is starting to hear LTT hear it. if the voice is from the age before the AoL, then it must be sane; there was no taint.

in CoT,the Strengthening Storm, Rand hears this 3rd voice talking about the creator being a gardener and all that stuff. i do not have the quote, but i'll say that this 3rd voice sounds completely sane. a brilliant philosophical mind. and Rand says he can feel LTT listening to him (the 3rd).

well anyway i don't have the proof but i don't think he is crazy.

stupid crazy dragons. :p

I am thinking that the voices start gradually even though the link starts when they first channel. Almost like it is part of the channelers mind. The more they channel, the stronger the link with the dead channeler becomes until it becomes apparent it isn't their own mind.

The reason i asked if it was instant voices for LTT (and hundrend companions) was this, from The Strike at Shayol Ghul:

The seals were placed safely, without ripping open the Dark One's prison as many opponents had feared. By chance, all thirteen of the Forsaken were at Shayol Ghul (perhaps summonded for a conference with the Dark One?), and they were trapped in the sealing, thus decapitating at one stroke the Shadow's leadership...

...But that was not the only result, of course. Instead, there was the counterstroke from the Dark One at the moment of sealing, and saidin itself was tainted. Lews Therin and the sixty-eight survivors of the Hundred Companions went insane ON THE INSTANT. Within days they were leaving trails of death and destruction in their paths.

I just thought that since they all went instantly insane, then these voices of dead channelers became completely present in their heads.

but yes, for channelers in this age i agree it is a gradual onset of voices

maybe the third voice is a sane Lews Therin Telemon. Now that the Taint has been healed, maybe Lews Therin is just a raving lunatic like before.
