oices Implanted in Rand's Head

by Reniel: 2001-01-07 | 6 out of 10 (4 votes)

Previous Categories: Who is the other person in Rand's head?

The voices in Rand's head are planted there not by the soul of Kinslayer but by the hand of the Dark One. These voices make Rand think he is insane and are constantly calling for him to kill the Aes Sedai, some of which prove usefull to him now and possibly in the future (e.g. Cadsuanne, Alana, Elayne, etc.)
When I say the Dark One's hand I mean the taint that he placed on the male half of the source. The taint is directed to kill any male channeler, or drive them crazy, forcing others to kill them. This is to prevent the chance of the Dragon Reborn living to the Last Battle, a precaution that the DO took before he was imprisoned.
Rand is being effected by the taint that the Dark One left on the source and he's beginning to think the voices in his head, directing him to kill people that are of use to him (yes, even Taim) to ruin his chances of survival.

So you think that the third voice that LTT mentions is merely a part of the madness that has infected Rand from the taint? That makes a ton of sense. I wonder if it starts off with one voice and multiplies over time.

It must get quite noisy and confusing in Rand's head these days. Laughing madmen and the emotions of 4 women!

I don;t think it's JUST the taint. I mean, if every saidin channeling man learned the old tongue and balefire and travelling and stuff, would'nt everything be a little different?

The problem I see with this theory is that the DO wants Rand to live and submit to him - he doesn't want the DR killed off anonymously, the DO wants the glory of converting or defeating the DR at the height of his power.

Personally I think the taint was just the DO lashing out at whatever he could still touch as the seals closed - and all he could reach to corrupt was the very weapon being used to lock him away.

Since it was all a last-resort thing, I don't think the DO had any aim in mind with the taint - he was just out to corrupt whatever he could, to give him a chance of getting back out in the future.

I agree with araqyl.
