An Hour With Harriet

2012-04-30: I had the great pleasure of speaking with Harriet McDougal Rigney about her life. She's an amazing talent and person and it will take you less than an hour to agree.

he Waygates

Previous Categories: Miscellaneous Theories

Well, saidin's been cleansed, right? And since the waygates were created with saidin, well, are they cleansed too, and if so, what'll happen to machinshin? and when shayol ghul was destroyed, was the waygate there destroyed too? Maybe it'll take time to clean itself out just like it did to get all tainted... well, anyway, i think that i don't have a theory.

All good questions. This is an old debate of what would happen when Saidin was cleansed. Will the voices end? Will anyone suffering from sickness, now get better, the madness going away. Or will those things tainted, remain tainted? I think I have been heard to support the idea that things will be cleansed, the Asha'man will not go mad any longer, the madness will be healed.

I'm assuming that the cleansing of saidin will have the same effects on the current users as gentling them does... it doesn't "cure the madness" but it doesn't let it grow anymore... and anyone new or that hasn't had any madness won't have any.

I agree.

RJ confirmed in one of his interviews that it is cleansed - madness won't get worse but not better either.

But this brings up a question then...are the voices a mental disorder? If the taint is gone. But the illness still remains, will the voices still be heard? So what part of Lews Therin is a function of the madness or disease?

The voices are probably just a mental disorder. Think about it. Crazy people hear voices, and they weren't touched by the dark one. The taint doesnt make you evil crazy, it just makes you insane. I think that the crazys will remain crazy.

And i dont think there ever was a waygate at shayol ghul. They where only built near stedding to my knowledge and there has been no mention of a stedding near the DO's residence (kinda).

Drekan: 2002-12-10

I am pretty sure there was never a waygate at Shayol Ghul, as the waygates were created post breaking, as a thanks from some men who rested in the stedding(can't channel in stedding, so even if tempted, they couldnt).

Since shayol ghul was the residence of the DO before the breaking, and no one has been there since the breaking unless they r Darkfriends or trollocs or other shadowspawn, makes sense that there is no waygate at Shayol Ghul. Portal stones on the other hand...

I wonder if there is a portal stone at shayol ghul? if not, its going to be a very very long battle to fight through all the creatures of the blight.

And also, it makes sense that the waygates would take time to cleanse( if they do) as it took time for them to become tainted. Probably, they wont be cleansed before the end of the series(or Rand or some other channeler cleanses them and they can be used again before the end of the series.) Machin shin will probably fade if the ways cleanse naturally or be destroyed if someone cleanses the ways. Thats my theory anyway.

I think the author meant the way gate at Shadar Logoth and just made a mistake..... could be wrong though...

8

DeathKnight: 2003-02-17

The waygates have nothing to do with the DO. And there is a waygate in Shayol Ghul its in the middle of the city.

9

jason wolfbrother: 2003-02-18

Shayol Ghul is not a city. It is a mountain. There is no waygate at Shayol Ghul.

10

Callandor: 2003-02-18

Correct. There is not Waygate at Shayol Ghul. There are Waygates in the Blight because the Blight was further up in the world before when they were built.

Jearom: 2003-02-19

I' ptetty sure the author meant to ask about the waygate in Shadar Logoth - There is one there.

Remember that the Ogier were given the talisman of growing. This allows them to grow a new waygate to wherever they wish - not into stedding - they grew waygates to each city where they worked as stonemasons - so that they would have to spend less time outside stedding on traveling. They generally placed the waygate inside a grove which was planted to try and stave off the longing.

Aridhol was one of the cities to be worked on by the masons - and I think that it was on of the first to have had its grove destroyed. The land was used for building hence the gate is now - or I suppose was? - in the city.

12

Callandor: 2003-02-19

I think thats a little incorrect. The Waygate at Shadar Logoth was built a little away from the grove its just that the grove got built over by the city itself.

Daishan: 2003-02-19

By the way, does anyone have any ideas to whether the Waygate at former SL still exists? It has been stated that almost nothing can destroy a Waygate. I would speculate that what Rand did fits in the "almost nothing" category though... If the Waygate has been destroyed, than it was affected by what Rand did, whether directly or indirectly. That might have had some effect on the state of the Ways...

14

Elder Haman: 2003-02-20

Well... We know that Rand got three answers from the 'finns. One was "to live you must die" in response to Rand asking how to survive the Last Battle. Two was how to cleanse Saidin - we hear Rand thinking about how Fel called the 'finn's answer theoretically sound. I bet the third question was how to cleanse the Ways - I remember Rand making that comment to someone that he planned on cleaning them.

15

Daishan: 2003-02-21

Rand made that comment to Taim I think. In the same rant where he made the comment about cleaning up Saidin. Taim rather stared at him afterwards. Have to look it up but I think it's the scene where Rand takes Taim to the Farm for the first time. That LoC right?

The Waygate would be clean because machinshin would be a result of Arihdol, remember there was a waygate in SL. the black wind has almost all of the same proporties as the Arihdol.
