An Hour With Harriet

2012-04-30: I had the great pleasure of speaking with Harriet McDougal Rigney about her life. She's an amazing talent and person and it will take you less than an hour to agree.

errin the Builder

Previous Categories: Miscellaneous Theories

As many may be aware it is generally believed that Rand is the Destroyer, Mat is the Preserver and Perrin is the Builder.

We know that Rand will destroy. He already has. The Aiel beliefs have already been destroyed.

Mat will be the Preserver. He's working his way toward that as the son of battles.

Perrin on the other hand has not yet begun his task as the Builder. I've read many theories on the net regarding Perrin and his destiny and when it will begin. Most people seem to think he will become the Builder after Tarmon Gai'don.

In my experience with the Sci-Fi Fantasy genre I haven't come across many books where the story continues for long after the main climax.

Therefore I think Perrin will become the Builder much sooner. From Winter's Heart we get the impression that the 3 nations Rand has under his control are slipping through his fingers. Sooner or later Cairhien, Andor and Tear will rebel.

My thoughts are that if Andor rebels and elects someone other than Elayne as Queen they will discilpine the Two Rivers for flying the Red Eagle banner on Andorin soil. Elayne herself has said they cannot do this for too long without repercussions.

When this happens Perrin will decide that his course of action will be to unite the nations under the Dragon banner.

At this point he will discard the axe (or perhaps re-forge it) and take up the hammer.

Going out on a limb -

-Faile's mother and Davram Bashere will be killed defending Saldaea (Perrin will be the next ruler of Saldaea).
-She will come up with the idea of uniting the nations to try to prevent this sort of thing happening again.
-Berelain will support her and that's about the only issue they will agree on.
-The Two Rivers will be attacked by Andor and it's renegade Queen (not Elayne)
-In the remains of the Two Rivers Blacksmith forge Perrin will make his decision. Walking through the Blacksmith remains, remembering what it used to be like he will begin working the forge. He'll start hammering at his axe as a gesture of his frustration at having to carry something that couldn't do anything to protect his beloved home.
-At the end he will have decided to follow his wife's plans to rebuild Artur Hawkwing's empire. Then, when he looks down, his axe will have become a hammer.

As I said "out on a limb" but that's my vision of how Perrin will take the path of the Builder and carry the hammer instead of the axe.

Timeline? At the end of the eleventh book.

It would be nice if Perrin had some purpose other than being wolf-boy. :)

Okay, lets take what you say symoblicly. Will he give up the axe? I think so. He will find the song, so he must give it up. But will he have Faile?

Ok, when has Jordan done anything as corny as you "Perrin will look down and his axe will have turned into a hammer?" Never. I agree with you that he will be the builder, but I think that it will be in the form of past things coming again. First is his wolf-sense thing, then Menetherin. I think that he may bring about a lot of old stuff from the age of legends and the age before it that created the Portal Stones. I think that after the Last Battle will be a perfect utopia that even the Age of Legends didn't achieve. I think that in this age they will understand the one power and all the different talents perfectly. Look at all the stuff suddenly reappearing and being dicovered, first off that Severing can now be healed. I think that Perrin will be the biggiest tool in merging all these new things together. he is the slow thinker, but he always gets it right. I think that he will be more of a steward of the world. Rand will be in charge, but Perrin will be what holds it all together until and after the last battle. Of course he has to be at the last battle, but I think it will be in the form of a messenger. Mat will devise the strategy, Rand will do most of the fighting, but Perrin will be the link that not only gathers info through his wolf buddies, but passes this info and communicate to the other two through the swirling colors they all see.

I agree with Tam on Perrin being more than just the wolf-boy. for now he seems only as a sidekick and I really don't think that Jordan would have made it so if he didn't have any ideas for him later... And Perrin is certainly the type to keep the world from falling apart after TG, so... I like this idea

i think stanLee makes a very good point. Perrin will be a builder, a connecter. linking ties from the old world and now, and together with all these concepts will come wisdom and peace. i also think Min maybe a big factor in construction, with all her inventions and what not. Her and perrin should hook up, and i think Perrin will be the deciding factor in helping Elayne gain the throne. of course elayne will still do it herself becoz of her sense of female and self-pride, but perrin will help quell her enemies or something.

perrin turned the two rivers into a thriving city in what... a year? if that alone is not building i dont know what is.

Like the idea. And I agree with a large part of your theory. I have always thought of Perrin the builder, as the builder of armies for the last battle.

Perrin's the magnet that connects, not only the nations, but the armies, together as they assualt Shayol Gul. We have seen this happen at Dumai Wells, being sent for Masema, and now going after Faile.
